Never thought I'd have to ask this question but is anyone awre of a good well respected Animal Rescue Centre in the Granada, Malaga, Antequera triangle?

Have checked out online the one in Marbella but its too far to travel.

Ive checked Yellow Pages but can find nothing,

Folks, you may recall that I recently adopted two little 6 week pld pups; I am pleased to report that they are both well and slowly being accepted into the rest of our pack. We have a problem though in that the pups bring our number up to 5. All these in a very small house with no garden or outdoor patio. We can cope with this however; the fact that our home now resembles a kennel we can live with; tripping over sleeping or crashed out loony animals; causing the Amazon rain forest to be depleted by a few trees each week as Mercadona struggle to keep up with our demands for kitchen rolls used for mopping up.

Our reason for trying to find a rescue centre is because, like many other campo villages ours has become something of a dumping ground for unwanted dogs. Whilst out walking the pack earlier this week, my attention was drawn by one of the village kids to a pack of 5 Podenco puppies and their mother. They are currently living rough in the campo in a small cave in the rocks at the edge of one of the olive fields and are all undernourished. I have taken to going out and feeding them once a day since the pups cannot fend for themselves and Mum is having a bloody hard time trying to keep herself alive much less the pups as well.

As much as this little family is tugging hard at my heart-strings, I cannot in all good faith take them in, we have neither the space nor the finances to adopt them, it wouldnt be fair to the existing pack who are still a little shell-shocked by the arrival of the other two pups; but nor can I bring myself to call the local Sanidad office as I feel certain that they would be put down soon after collection. With the colder weather now rolling in I feel I should be doing something. Clearly they have been abandoned and I think they were abandoned by one of the villagers but I'd have a hard time proving it.

I find it hard to fathom the mind-set of the Spanish when it comes to breeding dogs; its irresponsible to say the least, but in a nation that tortures and kills bulls for 'sport' and 'culture,' irresponsibility comes naturally I guess...

Anyway if anyone knows of a respected Centro de Rescate please let me know.

Thanks.

Try these, they are in Puente Genil.  When we had trouble with one of our dogs attacking the other, they took him. It did cost though I think it was 100euros

Hi there.  Glad I'm not the only one who can't find an animal rescue centre near Granada!  I moved over here eary September 2011, together with my dog and cat.  As my dog is now elderly (over 14 yrs old), I thought maybe i would get another younger dog before I lose my Dukey.  Not sure I could cope with a small pup and all the house-training etc but maybe one that's about 2-3 yrs old.  However, like you, I cannot seem to find a centre near Granada and I don't have a car either.  I can quite appreciate your feelings about this poor mum and her pups, and you have five already in a small place which I think is highly commendable.  You are right, in the main the Spanish people do not care much about dogs (luckily there only seem to be a few strays in my village and my landlord has two dogs that are very well cared for).  Sadly, Britain seems to be going the same way as mostly all the rescue centres are almost always full to capacity - and we are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers!

I do hope you find someone to take these dear souls - preferably someone with a large garden or farm I should think.  And, if you do hear of a decent animal sanctuary near Granada please let me know.  Good luck!

Have a look at www.sos-animals.org or SPAP Granada at www.amigosdelosanimals.org.es which unfortunately is only in Spanish.

Hi.  Thanks for the information - I will take a look at those.  I don't yet speak very much Spanish but Google will translate for me, I think, into English.

My - does that make it 7 dogs you have in all.  My son lives in Lliria near Valencia - came over here with 1 dog and now has taken in another 4 or 5, so nearly as many as you have now.

Val

Leytonette... Hi!

Further update and apologies for not having replied earlier...

The count is now 9....

Izzy and Leo, the Greyhound and Saluki we brought over from England, and hence the original pair have set up their Royal Apartment in the spare bedroom and play Alpha female and male over the rest of the house pack which comprises Sox, a neutered female, total P-I-T-A, Podenca, Freddy a neutered male Pod / galgo cross who has serious identity problems, Spike and Scruffy near twin brothers of indetermined ancestry, Suzy a beautiful neutered Podenca (the sole survivor of the Troglodyte puppies) and last but by no means least at least in terms of noise and yappiness Pippa and Sophie, mother and daughter again of indeterminate ancestry. All former abandonados...

How we arrived at this figure and other observations on our 'dogs life' existance is described in our blog Waifs and Strays.

Neighbours are firmly convinced we are out of our tiny minds but apart from an occasional beef about noise levels whenever I leave the house are reasonably happy with the situation.

All that may change however on August 17th, 18th and 19th when once again our sleepy little village becomes a cross between Beirut, Belfast and Baghdad with fireworks and nightly explosions... yes folks it's Fiesta time again... and once again I'm going to have to cope with the situation alone as Summer makes another month long visit to the UK. Dont know who needs the Valium more, the dogs or me!

Never did find a local rescue centre prepared to engage in meaningful conversation...
