We spend just three months a year in Spain and on this trip we have noticed that Mercadona have changed their milk to a cardboard carton type. This milk is labelled Fresca but the dates on the cartons show a three week shelf life. It seems to be a sort of hybrid UHT/ pastuarised type . Anyway it disagrees violantly with me. Other supermarket "fresh" types seem fine. I suppose it saves Mercadona a lot of money if they can keep this "fresh" milk on the shelves for a few weeks, but its not "Fresh" in the normal meaning of the word. In France, and I think the UK,  "fresh" milk has a shelf life of less than a week.

I just hope this is not a trend that will be followed by other supermarkets here.

Can't say as i've noticed that as all the milk in our local Mercadona has always been in cardboard containers. We usually get the green carton, so will take a closer look next week when i'm out.

Just bough milk in Tesco and the sell by date is 14th October.

As much as I can remember, Mercadona have always sold them in the cardboard cartons.  We buy ours from Carrefour or Consum (same brand - used to be Presidente but now Lactel I think) as it has always tasted a bit better (to us).

I know that you would not term the milk we buy as fresh milk but for years now we have been using Asturiana which comes in packs of 4. It is a white plastic bottle with a coloured top. One other reason why we like it is because it pours well. Some of the cartons drip too much.

We bought Fresca milk from Mercadona on arrival and 11 days later when we were leaving the milk still tasted normal and I'm picky about milk.

Fresh milk in Spain is 'Leche del dia'   So I don't know what you are buying.
