Ooops, I think my last message wasnt clear, Tamara.... and yes, I can see it was a sweeping statement

For people who are self-supporting or have work that they can continue whilst living in Spain / elsewhere abroad (ie internet based), then yes, why not take the plunge and make the move. If that was the case for my hubby and myself, we would probably make the permanent move to our Spanish home. We realise that work is very hard to find in Spain, so for now, we have to settle for 4 - 5 trips per year.

What I do find surprising is the number of threads that are started by people asking about work, benefit entitlements etc in Spain and do not appear to know where they want to live, think work is available (there may be jobs,  but how secure are they?) etc and appear to have not initiated any sort of research into any of this. My previous comment was a general statement and not specifically referring to the original poster.

Yes I completely agree with that Wend. In my view life IS cheaper here in Spain (I know many disagree with that) and thee is a higher quality of life - but you still have to be able to afford to live. Young Spanish people in my village are travelling to the UK for work. My neighbour drives the half-hour to Málaga six days a week to do shift work at a supermarket because she can't get anything nearby. Work is tough to come by for the locals, so we immigrants without perfect Spanish (I can do quite complex conversations and negotiations but am by no means fluent) haven't a hope of getting paid employment. So it's either set up our own businesses (and the autonómo of €260 per month is an obstacle) or be self-funding. Not all sun and sangria.
