Hi, recently sold a property. 3% of the sale value was sent to tax office. Solicitor says I can apply to have it refunded. It all sounds too easy. There must be a catch! What could go wrong? Anyone applied for the 3% refund?
Thanks

The reason they withhold the 3% is when a non-resident sells a property the authorities know this is their last chance to get any tax owed. They check if you owe anything and this can take 6 - 9 months approx. Then your lawyer should claim back anything that remains, on your behalf.

Or you could save the fee, which might eat up a lot of any refund, and apply to Hacienda yourself.
