Is it the cheap house prices? In general Southerners have done nicely in the way of price increase in their UK residence over the last 20 years and have lots of equity, whereas...
You can get a nice gaff for not much at all in most parts of Spain.
No disrespect etc intended.

Yes, the Southerners in UK have done well.
However, the OP said Northern England.

Northerners’ have been attracted to Benidorm since the TV series. Can you fault it, Madge Harvey boarding house, 4€ a bottle London Dry Gin, 5€ a bottle Scotch whisky, 4€ a packet of fags, whippet racing three nights a week, bingo 24/7, it’s home from home but much cheaper.

Not all northerners. There are people from across the UK and Ireland. (Try St Patricks day in Cabo Roig - last weekend).
But Jarvi is right. Warm and sunny (and reasonably priced property and cost of living).
When you spend a fortnight in February with wall to wall sunshine. dark at 6-30 not 4pm. Golf some mornings, folk music, cheap food and booze in the afternoon, when the golf course at home is water-logged, you start to want more of it.

Its simple t work out why ..people from the UK move to the Costa's ...if you haven't worked it out yet hear is the reason you sell your back to backTerrence house in the UK for around £100,000 you take your Pension/£100,000 and buy yourself a nice place in the sun and start enjoying cheap dining out /drinking out/socialising/meeting people/ Beach every day /95% of the time you are wakening up to a sunny day and so on its a no brainier.
