Sorry to hijack this thread - I don't come (or do any of my family come) from Leicester not have Tel whats it. BUT I did wonder if one of you 'Comms' professionals out there could tell me why I can't hear my DVDs on my player in Spain?
I posted this request some time ago but didn't really receive any answers that worked.
We bought a small TV (I think 17 / 19 inch) and DVD player from our local electrical shop in Fuengirola, both LG. No problem with the TV sound but when we want to play a DVD we have to turn it up to the maximum allowed, which I'm sure can't be doing the set any good. Picture OK but whisper soft sound so I think I've got the right channel or settings on.
We purchased a SCART lead at the same time and the DVD player came with three cords - red, white and yellow. I plugged everything in a shown and even tried switching them around but still no improvement.
In the UK we have no problem with a small set and DVD player that aren't even the same make as each other.
Any suggestion welcome
Also would appreciate advice on buying a set top receiver. Had a quick look in supermarket but have no idea what I should be looking at or paying. Getting the basic channels via the communal aerial but would something more for those rainy days!!

Hi Sonia
Not sure if this helps but I've a funny feeling we had a similar problem though it tends to be my OH who watches stuff on our DVD player in our Spanish home & I could be wrong. Both our 20" TV & DVD player were bought in Spain. I seem to recall the sound on the DVD player was really low (so like your problem) but we used the TV remote to increase the DVD volume. Could I be correct ? Did you try that. Could be such a daft question but did you try ? (I'm sure you must have. )

Sounds to me like you are using the component cables Sonia rather than true SCART connectivity. There should be somewhere on the back of your DVD player to allow the male pins of a scart lead to be connected, then the other end of the male pins to the TV, it should work then.

We bought a SCART lead at the same time as the two machines and that is connected plus the DVD (coloured) cables. On our UK set we only use a SCART lead. The one we've got in Spain the shop told us was what we needed. I had wondered if these varied but I know we've swapped our UK ones around different machines with no change to either picture or sound.
If there was no picture I could (sort of) understand a connection problem but it's just the sound. I wondered if it was because the TV has a low output and if speakers might help but normal TV reception is fine.

You should only need a SCART lead. No need for the component cables.
You may also have your sound settings the menu turned down. Try going into the setup menu on the DVD and increasing the volume from the audio menu.
Good luck.

Sonia, did you see my post ? Did you relate to what I said ?
I just went to ask my OH & got little sense out of him as the Man Utd v Chelsea match is ready to start. (He wants his dinner though BUT he must learn to be a little less brusque. MEN for you, grrrr ..... !!!)

Sonia - I'm a little confused about how you're connecting the two.
1. does your dvd player have a scart connection and are you using a scart lead between this and the scart on the tv.
2. how many scart connections does your tv have.
I'm not an expert but my N I L told me that the coloured outlets (red, white and yellow) are pre scart connections. You can buy a scart lead which has the coloured leads at one end (some even come with a detachable scart connector.
If you are using this type of connection then that should be ok as well.
Who makes LG, have you tried asking a question on their website? Perhaps it's a known problem.
Bobaol advice sounds good unless of course you've already tried that.
When we bought our Samsung dvd/vcr combo the instructions booklet was in every language but English. Luckily a friend who is very good at DIY had offered to come out for a weekend with my husband to help us move in. At the last moment his son offered his help, he set up the combo and also wrote out an idiots guide for me to follow.

I'm a bit confused about this TV in Spain business. I am a Telmicro customer ( pay yearly ) and what I don't understand is why other providers are still broadcasting Sky?
There has been a lot of 'chat' in other places about just WHY Telmicro have stopped transmitting Sky, but no one seems to know what the truth of the matter is.
I was up at Norton's earlier today and was told that the piece about them ( Norton's ) in the free press was not in fact placed by them.
Apparently Cable will guarentee 'Sky? broadcast for one year. How can they do this if Sky is pulling the plug?????????
Also there is evidence that Sky ARE cutting off cards bought in the UK and being used in Spain.
Norton's offer a service where you buy a big dish and a box thing and they provide a Sky card ( for a price of course...........you have to pay the same price as for Sky in England )...................BUT how can this BE, if Sky will only allow broadcasting in England and Ireland.....................how can they do this???????????
As for 'it being legal'.......well they might be legally allowed to transmit in Spain, BUT it is not legal to transmit Sky here.
SO...............................what is going on? Is this another BIG con and will cost us all more money in the end ?????????

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I'll try them all out next month when we're over in Spain and report back.
I did wonder why I needed cables and SCART as we don't do that with the TV in UK. TV only has one connection and the cable is bog standard one so can't really go wrong. The less leads the better for me! A few years ago we bought a surround sound stereo that could apparently be connected to the TV but I never actually worked out how to do it. I've even forgotten how our VCR works as we've not used for years. No good asking OH as he's worse than me with technology.

Sky cards being used in Spain have been previously registered at an address in the UK. You cannot buy a Sky card in Spain and have the channels activated, they won't do it as they are not permitted to under the terms of their broadcasting licence. What happens is I buy my subscription in the UK at my home address (if I live at number2, the new subscription is taken out at number 2A). I put the new card in my box and ring Sky as they will want viewing card number, box serial number and the like to activate. when making this call, they are able to tell if you are ringing from an international number and will refuse your subscription if this is so. Once the card is activated and my UK direct debit set up, I can take my card anywhere (within the UK of course ) I want and put it in any Sky box to receive my subscription. The only time you can't do that is if you have Multi room as Sky will periodically ring the boxes which will be connected as part of the t&c's to ensure the boxes and cards are in the places specified. Apart from that, Sky have no idea where that card is being used.
If you don't want the subscription channels, you don't even need a card (unless you want C4 & C5, although they will be available soon without a card).

OK...me mighty confused
The options in Spain to view SKYTV are
1. Use a retransmission service - NOT a good option as they are all going to get shut down eventually it seems
2. Use your own sky card from the UK or Ireland (You have to have an address, so if you are going to sell up and move sticks doesn't seem to be an option
3. Use a Service that seems to sell the complete install
http://www.solar-sky.com/sat_basic.php
This is the one I am not sure about...how do they do this..

With regards to #2, do you still have family in the UK? Could you use their address? All the people that I know with Sky on our urb have purchased from a local "approved installer", which in itself is a falsehood. The cards have been registered to an address in Hull which has nothing to do with them, hence they receive regionalised BBC & ITV to Hull. Their payments are made from a UK credit card.

uhmmm I do but they already have sky...can I just purchase the card and not do anything else?
Also I know various friends over in Ireland who have now purchased standard decoders from ebay that unscramble everything...and I mean everything...the boxes costs about €100....and as long as you have a basic sub you can see all channels...

A post on another forum said earlier today "Currently on old National Geographical channel is hard core porn. Many might call Telmicro, but can I say thank you"
I see later in the thread it had changed so don't get excited !!

We're with Telmicro and we've decided to wait and see what happens.
The information changes daily and hopefully it will be resolved shortly. It is annoying not to get a complete service but the other suppliers could also be shut down at any time. IF that's what happened with Telmicro. Any service is better than nothing, some areas have been turned off completely (TeleEast)
From what I've read it could all change in a year and we'll be able to get free to air or even freeview if they start to use a satellite (or maybe I've misunderstood what's been written)
I'm with Virgin Media here in UK so can't go down the extra card route.
Didn't the Microwave system originate in Ireland! If so then this scrambler could be the next answer to beat Sky.
Me I just drop the cases and switch on surge adapter, wait for the box to unscramble itself. It'll be surprise surprise what channels do we have when I'm next over in June.
Not too keen on the porno channels wasn't impressed with them when we had annalogue, even DH fell asleep watching them!
We might buy a dvd recorder with TDT and something else, must look up thread before I go, so we can access Spanish digital channels. Not sure if we need to get another ariel installed as we only have the mesh one but thought it might be a good idea to have a back up if everything goes belly up!

We had Telmicro installed when we went over on December 14th last year as we were staying till January 6th & obviously staying in more than we do on our trips other times so wanted entertaining. We paid Telmicro's full amount 490€ for installation plus a concessionary 205€ (instead of the 219€ we were told it was, seeing as we paid December 17th, or about then, for the year). We are therefore covered till Christmas. We're going to sit it out & certainly not pay more to anyone else as everyone seems to be illegal if broadcasting Sky. If you do take your Sky card over you need a dish & I'm certain our community's committee would soon be up in arms about that. (We have a Telmicro communal aerial in pool area).Apart from that , that's illegal too anyway.
LATEST RTN 16/5/08 (Round Town News is a local free paper in our area).
See at the bottom it says RTN contacted Sky TV in London yesterday and this is their official response: “We authorise the reception of Sky TV in the UK and Ireland only. Our Terms and Conditions expressly prohibit reception elsewhere in Europe. While we’re not naïve enough to think overseas viewing can be stopped in every case, if we have evidence that a viewing card is being used outside the UK or Ireland, we will switch it off.”
Marksfish, Sten46 & others, I'm snitching on you all .....

That is why you have to be careful if you contact Sky about a viewing problem whilst outside of the UK. It won't effect me much anyway as we only have the free to air package anyway. The worst they could do to us is to remove C4 & C5, plus give us BBC London. As it happens, C4 & C5 won't need a card from later this year anway as they move from free to air to free to view. If you did take your own viewing card out on holiday and you were unfortunate enough to be found out and have the card stopped, how do they prove it once you are back in the UK with the card in the correct box? They can't!
Incidentally, for the free packages, you can use any satellite decoder, it doesn't need to be from Sky.

I dunno about that. Maybe they can, maybe they can't.
