Hand Luggage on Ryanair

Evening All,

Flying out for easter with hand lugggage only.  Could anyone tell me if Ryanair weigh your hand luggage, you see I am planning on cramming them as full as I can, but don't want to be caught out for excess baggage allowance if I am over my 10kg and this would be times five as there are five of us flying.

In our experience (travelling from Ireland) Ryanair are becoming more strict with each trip we take.  Personally, I wouldn't chance overloading the bag.

We were told by an air hostess that when hand luggage goes through the scanner they also can see the weight of the bag. However at that point the security dont specifically know which airline you are with so how useful that piece of info is I dont know. People often seem to use bags as big as the ones we have put in the hold as their hand luggage and we havn't seen anyone stopped. That said, Ryanair were on tv about three weeks ago defending their new 'stricter' regulations.

Ryanair have become very strict now.

Watch the size of your hand luggage (its less than other airlines)

Strictly only 1 hand luggage bag each (duty free purchases etc must go in Hand luggage)

I would suggest they will be looking at weight as well although i cant confirm this.

They have weighed our bags before but not  everytime. We always stick to the limits as the excess charges are very punitive. However, others take stupid size bags on and seem to get away with it which is really annoying so its down to whether or not you want to take the chance !

We flew out with Ryanair last February and yes they do weigh your hand luggage.

The allowance is 10kg.  When we went out over Xmas we took 2 suitcases and one of them was just over the limit but they charged us extra for it.  Think it was £9.50?

Was our stewardess right then?. Do they weigh then on the scanner?. We have never been told to weigh them at the booking in desk. If you book in on line the only other opportunity is at security.

The 1 piece of hand luggage seems to cause the most disruption at check in. Last time we went there were many females trying- mostly unsuccessfully- to cram an over stuffed handbag into their already well packed hand luggage!

Used Ryanair quite a lot now but never had our hand luggage weighed.  However, a few weeks back we noticed at the point of boarding they were insisting that all handbags/duty frees etc had to go into a single piece of hand luggage and then checking the size of the bag in the measuring frame thingy.  If it didn't fit it had to go in the hold and I'm sure they charged plenty for that!!

Same as Kev really, some had some whoppers & I don't know how they got away with them, we checked in online and our bag was never weighed or measured, just bear in mind what ever you buy in duty free still needs to fit in the bag but saying that on our flight anything goes and was a free-for-all to board. much prefer Easyjet myself!

We travelled with ryanair a few times last year with no hand baggage problems, however we went to Paris last month to watch France v Scotland rugby game and they had a set of floor scales at gate before we went through security and were weighing all hand luggage. We were flying from Prestwick, so it might depend on the airport as coming home from Paris they never bothered checking anyone.

It seems to vary from airport to airport.

We've flown regularly with Ryanair from Charleroi and never had a problem until last month when we flew to Alicante and they were extremely strict.

Not only was all hand luggage weighed, the sizes were checked as well. If they didn't fit in to the frame you couldn't take it on to the plane, even if it weighed less than 10kg. It caused chaos as probably half the hand luggage people had was either too heavy or too big, or both. There were huge queues as people transferred stuff from bag to bag to try to meet the limit, but many were forced to check-in their luggage, at a cost of course.

Even after eventually getting through to the Security checks are they were still pulling people up and doing spot checks.

At Alicante however on the return flight however they were much more relaxed, they didn't check the weight or the size. However they used to be like that at Charleroi as well so I think it's only a matter of time before they get stricter there too.

We always travel Ryanair from East Midlands and check in online.  They don't seem to weigh hand luggage but no doubt they will soon have scales at the boarding gate.  At East Midlands I have never had my luggage size checked, but at Murcia they were checking lots of bags and several were made to check their bags in at a cost of 30 Euro.  So be careful, if they can charge you they will.

On our journey home last Feb (BMI baby) from Alicante back to Cardiff our luggage was 1 kilo over and we were changed 14 euros.  (It is 14 euros for every kilo you are overweight!).  Lady behind us her luggage was underweight and she was more than willing for us to have her 'extra kilos' so to speak but woman at counter was having none of it.  Also when we went through passport control and your hand luggage is x-rayed security women asked me "is this your luggage" and stood well back   as if I was a terrorist.  Of course there was a bomb in my bag and not a bottle of tomato sauce which I had completely forgotten about.

Flew back using Ryanair and strict with hand luggage is putting it mildly.

All hand luggage is weighed if you check in only one per person and a handbag no matter what the size is classed as one piece.

If you have done an on-line check in they have scales at the doors as you go to board the plane.

They weigh the case and check to make sure it fits in the metal frame.

We saw at least three people being made to pay for excess weight before they were allowed to board and some were made to put their bags in the hold if they did not fit in the frame.

So for anyone who is travelling with them you have been warned.

To be fair to Ryanair their policy is clear. The last two flights we've been on have been full and we've noticed the flight crew having difficulty loading all the bags in the overhead lockers. Perhaps they've decided they've got to clampdown. Ayway, don't need much to wear if the weather keeps up !

FFS people, follow the rules, ''my bag was over'' ''but the lady behind me''........... well your bag was over, end of, don't whinge, u tried to get away with it and got caught, mine was 5 kilos over in Jan but £35 penalty was far cheaper than posting the goods.

My bag was full of nitro glycerine, the woman's behind me wasn't.................... get it ??????????

I use Monarch on a regular basis purely because they allow 20 kilos in storage and 10 kilos in hand baggage, and as an airline they are 10x better than the cheapo airlines, their service is better and their seats are better. £20 more for a comfortable 2:30mins journey compared to the Ryanair seats in a rush debacle

You pay for what you get, you've bought somewhere for £100k on Condado, think about it

Priority boarding makes it a bit less a stampede on Ryanair now.

Jet2.com is worth looking at - they may be slightly dearer than Ryanair, but you get 22 kg allowance plus hand luggage of 10 kg as well.  You can also choose to reserve your seats - think it costs about £4 or something like that but well worth avoiding the stampede to get on the plane!

We have used Ryanair from East Midlands to Murcia for most of our visits to Spain but are finding them to be more and more strict on luggage allowances.  If you are checking luggage in, most cases or large holdalls weigh between 4 and 5 kg empty so you don't have much left for anything else.   The extras charges that they add on to the basic fare price seem to be going up quite a lot as well. 

Also heard talk of Ryanair starting to charge people £1 for using the toilet - now that really is taking the p--s!!

      We went over in february with just hand luggage and ryanair weighed them at liverpool and on the way back from murcia. They're always looking to make more money so best to be safe and stick to the 10kg per bag, simon won't be grumpy then if you don't go over the limit, lol.
