All in all, the number plate recognition is no deterent whatsoever to anyone, it's about as much use as t*ts on a bull..!! . At the back end of last year, we stayed at the Intercontinental on Polaris's Mar Menor resort. We turned up in a hire car, our number plate flashed up on the digital sign, the barrier went up (with nobody in the gatehouse) and that was exactly how it was for the next five days.
However, it's not just the Polaris resorts which are lacking in security. On two occasions we went over to La Manga resort where there are some far more serious properties and each time we rolled up to the gatehouse (which were manned at all times) again the number plate recognition activated and then the barrier just went up with no movement from within the gatehouse. That did susprise me as I've stayed at La Manga several times over the past few years and the gatehouse staff always at least made a point of coming out to your car.
I think without question that Polaris needs to introduce some kind of electronic card/fob to operate the barriers at entrances to the site. However, can you imagine the nightmares that will cause with short term visitors renting properties. They'll have to be in posession of a card/fob before they arrive and then of course there will be plenty of those visitors losing their cards etc.

Hi All
It would be easy to introduce a swipe card for all, Owners/residents could have a fob which they would use all the time, I think these can be coded so they can be cancelled if lost. Visitors staying for short stays could be issues a disposable swipe card upon first arrival, which is activated to allow access for the number of days they are staying, card like Hotels issue for rooms. People arriving to visit someone can be phoned by security (when they put the coms in) to verify and then be allowed access, similar for deliveries.

Having been to our apartment 2 weeks ago and saw the poor gate security on return I emailed RPM and asked them when the residents security lane and Key tags were being introduced.
As I expected I got no reply.
I don't know about anyone else but when we visited with the PW rep last year we were told that all residents would be issued with 2 keyfob electronic passes which when used in the "residents lane" at security would automatically allow entry. Everyone else using the visitor lane would be stopped.
The 2009 budget for security is just under 500,000 Euro its about time we started to see some value for this
I have just emailed RPM and will post any reply on the forum, assuming I get one.

We were told the same as Phil and it is definately one reason we purchased at Polaris, we expected key fob security. Whilst they seem to record registration numbers this isnt sufficient as a security method. All these resorts will have vulnerable areas especialy those homes on the outer reaches but the security gates shouldnt be vulnerable and probably from late evening most should be closed/barred except for emergencies.

Thank you Margaret
It makes very interesting reading.
It sertainly comes over as being very efficient
I was particulaly interestedin the notes on xecurity
I wonder if Condado could implement something on the same grounds

Interesting reading remember La Torre have learned their lessons the hard way.
We have the benefit of learning from their bad experience which is why I full support the small group of the current residents association who are pressuring RPM to justify their costings from day 1.
Its strange that when they have supposedly beefed up their security they have these break ins

Hi folks,
I have read with interest the posts on this forum and a few others regarding the security on various developements.
Whilst I completely agree that PW need to address the general situation and fulfil their commitment to providing a secure environment, I have to say that with key fobs, personal security checks, car searches, roving patrols, number plate recognition and swipe cards..........it would only take one crooked security guard to negate the whole thing.
The only way to ensure your property is secure is by restricting access to your door keys, even changing the locks to be absolutely sure, having shutters on all the windows and maybe a lockable gate at the entrance to roof terraces. God knows we don't want the place to look like a Hackney council estate with bars and metal grilles on windows and doors, but we have to face the fact that all these expensively furnished, frequently empty, easily accessible apartments are very easy pickings for even an amatuer thief, let alone any organised, professional gangs that may know (or bribe) a bent security guard or PW employee.
How about this for a cold reality check............the global recession we are in is probably not going to get much better in the next year or two, so stealing from 'rich people' who can afford second homes in Spain probably won't bother lots of undesireable, desperate or just plain greedy folk who know how PW developements operate..............it might not be a nice thought and it certainly isn't fair, but I for one have worked damn hard to get what I've got and if all I have to do to protect it is get some fairly simple security measures put in place, I will do it..............
