This is indeed a cheap and easy option to get in and out of Murcia. Far better than driving and having the hastle of parking, etc.
Nearest station is in Alhama de Murcia. When you enter the town from Condado you go over the railway bridge... take a right at the next roundabout and then the next right again to double back towards the railway line. When you reach the railway line take a left and you arrive at the station after a few hundred metres. There is a big car park at the station. Trains are every hour and are cheap, a few Euros return (can't remember the exact price).
Only slight disadvantage IMO is that Murcia del Carmen station is a good 10-15 minute walk from the city centre, and the surrounding area looks a bit dodgy. Although we've never had any problems I'd still be a bit wary of walking about there after dark.
