Hi

I've seen a couple of threads on here which talk about cable receivers, bought in the UK, that people have taken over and set up at CDA and can now receive the UK Freeview channels.

One model that I've seen mentioned is Starview 4 or 5.

Any shared experiences, specifically on how to set them up, from people who have used this model or others would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I saw the same thread a couple of weeks ago and decided to buy one. I just received it in Spain today. Plugged it in... and with a little bit of setting up... It works!!!!

25 quid - including postage. Can´t go wrong.

Starview 5 was the one I got.

Copy/paste this link and you´ll go straight to it...

http://www.skywonder.co.uk/product.php?productid=1222&cat=0&page=1

You can pay a bit more and get a built in Hard Drive for recording.

(Much happier than when I paid Polaris 400Euros for theirs just over 2 years ago)

Regards, Brian

Hi Brian

How did you get it for 25£? Link says £69.99 and hard drive isn't built in - it is a plug in?

It looks like the £69.99 price has a 79% discount.  At the bottom of the page is says £24.99.  Just added one to the cart and still £24.99 - with free postage.

We're hoping to complete in the next few weeks so hopefully this will be a good little buy...

Yes.. Top of advert says 69, but at bottom its discounted to 25.

You can pay more for hard drive. On check out, it offers this option.

You just get the standard UK channels. Exactly like the PW box. BBC 1, 2, 3 & 4. ITV 1, 2, 3 & 4. A few music channels and a few kids channels. No sports.

Ideal for keeping up-to-date with Eastenders and Corrie...!!!

Brian

Ok thanks, we already have the PW set up and it works fine although immediateley after set up in 2009 one of the sports channels disappeared- so always interested to hear if other systems have more to offer.

Just Taken a Starbox 5 out with us to replace broken WISI (PW supplied) box.

The box will not auto scan and detect the channels so you need to put the information in manually.

I managed to do the main channels by looking at my neighbours box

Does anyone have a complete list of the channelsand the information you need to enter please?

Hi Phil

Can you please expand on what you mean by 'you need to put the information in manually.'

What information do you put in?

Thanks

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I had to put the channel frequency and some other information  in manually for the box to find each correct channel.

If you don't know the information I think it would be impossible to setup.

Luckily there are a lot of people with Starboxes so the information should be available.

PTAN  who posts regularly on here sells the starboxes on Condado already setup.

 Hi Phil,

Just been reading this thread.  Firstly, if anyone is thinking about getting one of these boxes then get one quick, they are at an unbelievably low price.  As Phil says I have been selling these for years and the last batch I bought in July cost me over three times this price.  The reduction in price ( over 79% ) is due to the cable providers in the UK having just brought out a new encryption method so these boxes will no longer pick up all the channels they used to, only the free to view ones, most people bought them to "upgrade" the firmware to get all the payable channels on NTL,Virgin etc free.    Starview have also brought out newer models that do work by using an internet connection to get the new codes via a server, so the 5 is no longer in production ( or demand in the UK ) so the suppliers are now selling them off cheap to clear them out, once the current stock in the UK has run out then that will be it and only the newer more expensive models will be available.  As with all electrical goods, the price of older models drop when a new one comes out, good for buyers now, but not so much for me as I've still got stock that cost me over three times the current price .

The boxes come configured for the UK cable providers and so will not automatically work at Condado, as Phil says each frequency setting will need to be manually configured and scanned to get all the channels.    If anyone gets a box and has trouble getting it to work, drop me a line and I'll set it up for them, for a small charge of course :-)  I'm also thinking of buying a number and getting them shipped over, if so then I'll be able to provide them at a good price which will 1) help recover the lose I will make on the current stock and 2) under cut everyone else :-)

Phil

When I set mine up last week, I used the automatic scan function. There are 5 or 6 different "providers" to choose from and I went through all of them. The only one receiving was the "NTL" one. The thing i noticed is that it went through the scan but always seemed to freeze at around 69% of the way through. But you have an option to exit the setup. So... on the next try, I simply exited at 68% of the scan. By this point... more than 80 channels had been received - including all of the BBC´s, ITV´s, Channel 5, a load of kids channels, a load of music channels and a load of "foreign" channels.

There may be more after the 69% mark... I don´t know... and perhaps knowing the manual codes will find these. But all of the main channels are there with the auto scan.

Regards,

Brian

Hello All,

I understand the Starview 5 has a record facility of 100 hours if you attach a 160GB USB hard drive to it.

Does anyone know if it will also record to a USB stick ie if I put an 8GB memory stick in the USB port might I get 5 hours of record time onto it ?

Could be very useful to tape a couple of progs whilst we're out 'n about and we can use extra sticks as necessary.

Cheers,

Malcolm.

Waheeey!!! Excellent news, can't miss Eastenders now ;-) Thanks.

Got another question now. We have one of these in the lounge of the 2 bed upstairs apartments in the Jardines, but are there connections in either (or both) of the bedrooms where we could also connect another Starview 5?

Malcolm.

Brain,  Don't know how you managed to receive any thing on the NTL setting?  It uses completely a different symbol rate to the Polaris system?  Just tried and got nothing.  Guess you were lucky?

Yep a USB ,memory stick works fine.  I use 4GB ones which give around 2hours

Ok, old thread, but if anyone has a list of Frequencies, Symbol rates, Constellations,  for the various boquets, why not place them on here for us who do not have "mates " on site to cribb off
