ruz defines Mazarrón as "the future epicentre of tourism in the Region"

The piece below is a translation of the piece put out by the Mazarrón PP following the presentation of a tourism project for Mazarrón by the Mayor and Consejero for culture. Normally these pieces are not posted on this site, as this event was a PP invitation event, not a Town hall/ Regional government event and therefore falls within our self-imposed ban of not putting out anything which comes directly from a political party rather than a government body, and refusing to carry any sort of political propaganda publicity.

The reason we are posting it is because of the importance of this Paramount project ( Click Paramount Murcia Theme Park overview) and the fact that it highlights how much the municipalities surrounding Alhama de Murcia will also benefit from the creation of the Park, and therefore, the businesses within them.

Whilst this document is designed to seek the votes of the local businesses and stimulate the flowing of juices of anticipation by highlighting the business opportunities available to local businessmen, who will undoubtedly leap to in a frenzy of planning applications for apartment blocks, it is also a symbol of support for Mazarrón council by the  regional PP government.

The truth is, the PP majority in Mazarrón is at risk.

With 20% of the municipalities´voters being of British origen, and the unprecedented volume of expats who signed onto the electoral roll in January, giving Mazarrón more than 3000 expat voters, the largest number by far within the region, Mazarrón has to deal with the prospect of wooing the expat vote.

11,000 voters gave the PP an absolute majority in the last election, so these 3000 could make a vast difference, but did they all leap to action and sign onto the electoral roll in order to ensure that their Mayor was re-elected?

The much documented protests against the failure of the administration to deal with the issues on Camposol, the bitter opposition to the transfer of the Mazarrón marketplace, and the continued demonstrations by residents against the construction of a crematorium in a residential area do not bode well as vote winners.

A charm offensive is underway, efforts being made as the horse leaps the last hurdle to show resolve for sorting out their problems and dealing with their issues, the future being the place all eyes must be turned towards in the promise that this new generation theme park will bring home the bacon for all those who trust in it.

And the Consejero for Culture and tourism has spearheaded this whole project from the start, so should it come off as all around it hope it will, then as he says, Mazarrón will be a very good place to be in the coming years.

Although he mentioned the Paramount theme park Murcia as being the big project for the future, there was no mention of whether the financing had yet been obtained to make it a reality, the news everyone is waiting to hear.

On Wednesday night, the next big gun from head office is the Consejero for infrastructure, presenting the PP development plan for Mazarrón, again to an invited audience of local businesses.

On the 6th May the election campaigns begin officially.

The Regional Minister for Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, attended the presentation of the "Destination Mazarrón" project on Wednesday, together with Francisco Blaya, who is hoping to be reelected as Mayor later this month, and Alicia Jiménez, the PP candidate for election to the Regional Assembly.

The presentation took place in the Hotel Playa Grande, and among the more than 100 people present were many local businessmen keen to find out about the new program for promoting tourism.

The main thrust of the program is to position the municipality as a quality tourist destination and thereby to generate economic activity and create jobs. According to the program, during the eight years that Sr Blaya has been Mayor, Mazarrón's communications infrastructure has improved vastly, as have the infrastructures related to education, health, culture and tourism.

All of the effort made to improve infrastructures now demands a final push to transform tourism in Mazarrón into one of the flagships of the Region of Murcia, and this is the aim of "Destination Mazarrón". All of this is an effort to take advantage of the fact that the new airport is just 25 minutes' drive away, and the Paramount theme park will be only a quarter of an hour from the town.

In his speech, Pedro Alberto Cruz pointed out that Mazarrón will be one of the municipalities to benefit most from the theme park, since the visitors will continue to demand "sun and sand". He also stated that "Paramount will be the only true theme park in Spain, because the others are merely attraction parks".(By this statement he is talking about the status of Paramount as being a new generation theme park, rather than an area featuring thrills and spills.)

Mazarrón, he said, will become "the epicentre of tourism in the Region of Murcia, and the most visited municipality on the Region". In the light of this, he urged hotel and restaurant owners in the town and port to "prepare well, because this is a great opportunity, which we can't afford to let pass us by".

"The best is yet to come", he concluded, "for both the Region of Murcia and Mazarrón".
