This is a great idea  if,  like us off plan buyers, you have plenty of time. Some friends of mine who have bought a resale property in Costa Del Sol went along to the Spanish Consulate in early November and the NIE's arrived mid February.  They were due to sign contracts at the begining of January,

Mañana, I believe!

Personally, if it means another excuse for a tripette to España then I'm all for obtaining them locally.

We got our NIE numbers through our spanish solicitor. We met him outside the passport office in Murcia ( the queues looked hoorendous) but he took us in through another door, the forms were stamped and we were out of the building in less than 5 mins. The NIE numbers took about a month then, I would suggest doing this through your solicitor as it saves a lot of hassle.
