Hi All,

I am a bit confused about the weather in Jumilla ,i have heard reports that it can be VERY cold in the winter

hence we have opted for the gas c/h.

I have also been told that it can get very hot in the summer but the evenings are cool, does anybody know?

The reason i am asking this question is we are thinking of having mosi nets fitted, but i wonder are they needed.

Gratefull of any replys.

Cheers  Annette & Kev

The weather is changeable  and it has snowed in recent years namely 2006 but better than the UK  Ha! Ha!

it can reach 40 deg in summer and there are lots of flying insects

hope this answers your questions ,  have you been there yet ?

GAL

Hi Annette and Kev.  Been busy with houseful of guests for March so not had a lot of time to post but trying to catch up.

This is everyones favourite subject.  The weather.   Monday our guests had breakfast on the patio and got sunburned today it was 5 degrees.  The weather here varies a lot during the Winter and Spring months.

The winter here is from December to February.  You get  lovely sunny days most of the time but that does not mean it is not cold.  February through to sometimes Early May can be very changeable with some lovely warm weeks and then cold ones or days intermingled.  It is so difficult to explain to people because it is nothing like the UK .  The winter cold is dry.  The lowest temperature we have experienced is minus 12 for one week 2 years ago.  We have had snow fall 3 years out of 6.  The Spanish tell us prior to this they had not seen show for 36 years.  When the sky is clear and blue during the day it will be colder at night and will warm up again by 12 noon until the sun goes down and it gets cold instantly.  The winds can also be cold and gusty.  Everybody if they are going to use their new home at any time between October and May will need to have heating of some sort if you are going to live in it full time get central heating.  Once again I reiterate the winters are not the same as the UK.  It is not damp and dreary with grey skies all the time it is dry will sun and it can feel colder because its dry.  Also after you have lived here for a while you will get accustomed to the heat of the summer and feel the winters more.

The Spingtime is vary variable.  anything from 4 degrees to 23, wind occasional, rain occasional but still cold at night.

In general the difference between the coast and here is approx. 10 degrees so if its 18 in Alicante it will be round about 8 here.

The summer is hot but more bearable than the coast due to the dry heat.  Unless we have had an unusual amount of rain there is little humidity  However the rays will burn you real quick.  With a hat or a buggy and some good sun creeam you can play golf most times during the day and not have to tee off early morning or late afternoon as you do on the coast courses.  In theory your ball should go further due to the dry heat.  In theory

Mosquitos again are few due to the dry heat and lack of humidity.  but a few are still too  many.  At the SADM course they intend to have water holes so you may get more mossys due to the still water.  Mossy screens however are good for keeping unwanted cats and other flying insects out which, combined with grilles (rejas)  also makes it possible to sleep with your windows open at night, letting the breezes blow through in relative comfort.

All the above info is what I have learnt in the years that I have lived here.  I knew nothing when we first came here arriving on the 16th December with just one jacket and waking up the first morning to minus 4.

This year has been the exception warm compared to the previous 6 years but I think the same can be said for most of Europe.

I hope the above is helpful.   I Personally would not swap it to go back to UK weather and I would not want to actually live on the coast in the summer cos after a while (a couple of years anyway) you really do want to get out of the sun.

Thanks for the info Linda's

Very usefull. Just a bit confused about night time temperatures in the summer.  You talk about mossi screens being good for letting the breeze blow through when sleeping.... but we're assuming that the temperature at night would drop low and you probably wouldn't want the windows open. An idea of night time temperatures in the summer would be usefull.?

We have been out there .... end of Feb 07.. mid day to mid afternoon..... lovely temperature (out of the wind) ... guess winds are very variable but quite frequent ?

Not golfers by the way, but love the location.

Mind you both kev's son & brother are pretty good golfers ... so guess we'll see plent of them when Kev takes early retirement.

Thanks again Kev & Annette

I am also a bit confused!  We had decided on the combined air conditioning/heating, as we knew it would be cold in winter but hot in summer.  We are now considering gas central heating and air conditioning, but will look at the Azucena again when we visit in May, as we are not sure about where radiators will fit in (2 x 12 bar radiators in the living area sounds quite obtrusive!).  If we are likely to get mossies, I will be looking at getting mossy screens too, as the little bu**ers love me!

We aren't golfers either, but we loved Jumilla and Santa Ana.  My brother and nephew are keen golfers though, so we are going to be very popular with them once we move!

Sue

Again its can vary.  We have been to fiestas in August, 2, I can specifically recall Ubeda and Pinoso where we went 2 years running.  The first year we were out till 3 in the morning and it was warm and really nice.  The second year we left at midnight because we were cold.  However, in the 7 or so summers that we have spent here we would say that the last two weeks in July and the first two weeks in August have been the hottest at night. This has been when we have felt air con would be nice when trying to sleep.  This is when we sit out on the patio til the early hours of the morning or go and join the Spanish in the streets and sit outside restaurants and catch up with news and gossip, watching the world go by.  The heat builds up in the house during the day and it can feel really humid and  hot when trying to sleep but only for a few weeks. This is when you see the Spanish sitting out in the middle of the street with the neighbours.  The houses are kept as dark as possible at this time during the day, keep the sun out, and opened up at night.  I would also mention that we have an old house that is built for the weather here.  I dont have any experience of living in a new build here.  We do know you need heating.  We dont have air con and have never thought it worth putting in for a few weeks a year but we do not have a new build house so cannot advice in this regard.

We went to Dolores yesterday, which is between Alicante and Torrevieja on the coast road.  In the car it said it was 15 degrees outside.  When we got out of the car the wind was bitter and it felt more like 0.  When we left Jumilla the car said it was five degrees.  So again according to our car it was 10 degrees warmer in Dolores on the coast.  The sun is shining today, clear blue skies and it was 1 degree at 9.30 this morning.  Yesterday they had snow flurries in Yecla at 4 oclock  in the afternoon.  So on Monday past it was 23 degrees at  9.30 am  today  it is 1 degree and no wind.
