According to Wiki "In November 2011, the bank was taken over by the Spanish government, after the bank failed to meet adequate Tier 1 capital ratios".
I suspect that they have now just been sold off to La Caixa.
Operational Merger effective from 27/7/13
Lots of Info if you Google

I spoke to my bank (ex Banco de Valencia, now Caixa) in San Javier last week about this. They assured my that everything remains the same except the name. The internet banking site is a bit of a nightmare but log in details remain the same. They will be informing all direct debit companies in the coming months about changes to sort codes etc, customers will not have to do this. I also transfered funds a few days ago using all the old details and it went through fine.

Dear Whatman I usually transfer funds from my sterling account to my Spanish account by emailing Oficina1454 but I did this yesterday and it hasn't been done yet. I also can't do this within the La Caixa website. I tried phoning the branch but it rang 3 times and then I got the discontinued tone. I've been trying to work out how to phone the local La Caixa but I'll have to wait until tomorrow now. How did you transfer funds? Was it from UK or from one account to another?

Look at which symbol is on your card. There are several in Spain including Euro2000 and ServiRed.
It will be free from any in the same group. Can't remember who BdV are in sorry.

I have now spoken to someone at the bank and if I want to use internet banking I have to go into any bank of theirs and they will arrange it. Meanwhile, I can't use email to pay bills or transfer money within Spain. My arrangement was with Lola and Beatriz and not with them. They appear to be trying to be very security conscious. Transferring sterling from here to my euro account will still work. However, I have seen that I do have new bank account numbers which include a new branch number. I assume these are linked to the old a counts. Hope this makes sense. Loretta

Paul - La Caixa is part of the ServiRed group so you can use any bank that has this symbol outside for free. Sabadell, Caja Rural, BBVA are all part of this group. I think you can also use it in the Barclays machine without being charged.
I thought the old BdV branch had just been rebranded La Caixa for the time being - the one in our town certainly has even though there is already another la Caixa branch. No doubt thet will consolidate eventually though.
Loretta - most sensible banks in Spain stopped email and fax transfers some time ago as they were seriously open to fraud. I know someone who got ripped off for €10k by someone who mimicked his email address and transferred to their own account. I would suggest you set up DD's and then you won't have to do the emails.

Ok - so after a bit of research and a visit to the old BdV branch in San Javier I now have the facts.
Old Banco de Valencia branches in Murcia have been rebranded Banco de Murcia. Those elsewhere have become La Caixa. If you look at the logo over Banco de Murcia banks - it is on fact the La Caixa logo.
So the Banco de Murcia branch near El Patio is in fact a La Caixa bank.
They are definitely ServiRed group so you can use your cash card in any ServiRed ATM for free.

Thanks for this Pommers. I will heed your advice but there is still the occasional odd unexpected payment. They have suggested writing to them to authorise these. Loretta

Have a lookj on th th La Caixa website for contact details.
I suspect theat they will not help you over the phone though any longer as this is open to fraud.
You will probably find they will send you info to your registered address only.
