water and electricity costs

good evening everyone,

just looking for some advise we get the keys to our new holiday home on condado in 10 days and we were just wondering what the average cost of water and electricity is on the resort

i know that this question is the proverbial piece of string, but we are looking at the property being used for about 1 week per month ( or more if our daughter can find a source of free flights ) 

any advise on this matter would be a great help

Both water and electricity are low in price, your bill will depend on whether you have aircon, how many hours per day you have your water heater on etc. it is worth buying a timer from the Chino or our own supermarket and having your water on for so many hours per day...some people have it on all the time! i have mine on a maximum of 2 hours daily in Summer. what I would say is both have a fee for becoming new customers....1 is about 160 Euro and the other aout 200 Euro. You pay the town hall 120 Euro ( approx ) every July as a property tax as well.

Water bills are quarterly and come out ( in theory) July/ October/ January. I would hope this will be less than 40 Euro.

Electricity is bi monthly and is due at the end of August and then October, December, February etc. i am for 6 weeks in Summer and mine works out about 50 Euro per month..but I have no aircon. i keep my patio doors open and use a fan as required.

Community charges are again quarterly and are next due in October and then January.

I turn my electricity and water off when I go back to UK.

I am pretty sure you should leave the water heater on all the time as it turns itself on and off via thermostat, maintaining the temperature rather than having to start from cold each time you turn it on.

The big user is air con both in winter and summer as you need to cool now but heat up in winter. A good choice of air on that is high on efficiency will be the best way to keep electricity costs down. And don't let anybody tell you, you can manage without it, no chance in the high summer. JF

I have mine on 2 hours a day and it never gets cold! At the moment our showers are luke warm because of the heat so it leaves more than enough hot water! Have spoken to a few permanent residents who also use timers for few hours per day.....am curious for an electricians point of view as to which is best??.

On the subject of aircom...this is our 2nd summer without it...and not a problem at all...but we are all different...maybe if only here for 1-2 weeks you wouldnt get time to acclimatise...but if here for longer you soon get used to it!

Agree with John - water heater runs more efficiently and is more cost effective if left on. The thermostat will switch it off when it reaches desired level,

It seems like the toilet cistern is connected to the heater in our apartment so might end up costing us a lot of money if we leave it on all the time. Glad we noticed it so soon!

I just cant get my head round how it can be more cost effective to leave an electrical item on for 24 hours rather than 2 hours...I dont need to have it on until same time next day..it would be different if I ran out of hot water and had to put it on 2 hours later in the day!!
