We have just purchased a pethouse in Phase 3 and are looking to visit on a regular basis. So far we have found it impossible to find a car hire hire company that does no manage to increase the quoted price in some way.Does any one know of one. The alternative is to bring a car to Spain,I understand though the rules have changed on using a UK registered car, or buy a car locally any help would be apprecited.

Car hire can be a nightmare in Spain see

http://www.eyeonspain.com/community-forum/32564/car-fuel-charges.aspx

Cheaper rentals tend to load fuel or insurance costs.

Other  companies give you a full to full rental but cost more.

insurance can often be a rip off with high charges for excess insurance, cheaper annual excess policies can be bought in UK.

Shop around but always beware the hidden extras, a little like Ryannair.

Al Andalus car rental has been recommended previously on here.

uK cars would need to be re registered with lights changed etc. and can cost over 1000 euros in total.

Local cars more expensive than UK but worth looking at if over a lot.

The On- Airport companies now include Firefly which has something to do with Ryanair and Hertz, they have the fourth booth which is accessible from the baggage hall as well as the public side, the others are Goldcar, Europcar and Centuaro.

Goldcar is usually busy, I won't use Europcar aagain as I booked a seven seater from there a couple of years ago and they gave me aa 5 seater which was no good as we had a party of 6.

I use Centraro, As a member of their Gold Club they give full/full on the fuel, prioity iin the queue and have a points scheme which give a discount on further bookings. Vehicle wise I did have an issue with the quality of the car on my first hiring from them which they promptly changed and handled another issue involving damage efficiently with no claim against me.

I use a yearly insurance policy from icarhireinsurance.com which covers the tyres/glass etc damage for considerably less than any daily additional charge but a credit card deposit is needed.

I haven't used firefly yet, or any of the other car park pickup companies.

When I researche the 'broker' rental web sites some time ago, Carjet was the only one that gave the full facts about the hire agreements.

Thank you all for info, interesting it was firefly I tried last time. Booked through economy car rentals in uk It says final price including full insurance zero excess only fuel extra. Firefly took credit card took extra £90 over fuel policy when back in Uk. I complained was told I had booked extra insurance I did not need. Now both companies are refusing to answer e mails

Seems to be lots of little "extras" being charged at the mo - both in Spain and UK.

We hired a car last time we came back to the UK anad I was charged almost £200 for a tiny tiny little scratch that I am 99.99% sure I did not do. Car hire at £70 for the week seemed a good deal. £270 deffo NOT!

Friends who came to Spain a while ago also got charged for insurance that they KNOW they did not book as they have an annual polucy that they bought separately.
