A race of man against machine to take place in Murcia City
International athlete Juan Carlos Higuero will race against the new Murcia tram on its inaugural trip
A historic race takes place in Murcia City at the end of this month: a competition between man and machine, where the protagonists will be the European Indoor athletics champion in the 1500m, Juan Carlos Higuero, and the new Murcia tram.
The race takes place at noon on Sunday 29th April, where both contestants will follow the tram’s normal route along Avenida Juan Carlos I, starting off from the car park at Punto de Encuentro.
Higuero will run parallel to the tram and will make four pre-designated stops along the way, where four timekeepers will act as human traffic lights.
The tram vehicle, which will carry around 150 passengers on this its first journey, will pull in at two tram stops along the route, with both ‘athletes’ crossing the finish line when they end their journey behind Emuasa.
Higueros picked up his gold medal in the European Championships held in Birmingham last month, in a race where Spain also achieved the Silver and Gold.
He’s been nine times Spanish champion for the same distance, European silver medal holder on two occasions, and has represented Spain in the Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
