Does anyone know if you can purchase a dongle in Spain to plug into your laptop, then get pay as you go internet via the mobile network, as you can in the UK ? I think you need 3G coverage (what ever that is)

Hi
Yes you can get a plugin dongle via vodafone and I think Movistar do it also when you take out their mobile phone package but it is slow and not broadband and quite expensive tjo run not like the ones in England which we have had, and yes you need a 3G coverage on your mobile

Thanks for that Mike, would you happen to know roughly how much they cost in Spain and if Roda has coverage ?
We will only be going over for holidays and did not see the need to get a phone line connected. We would only need it mainly for e-mails and to use a Skype phone. I believe Vodaphone do one in England which cost £99 for the USB dongle, but they said I would be better off getting one from Vodafone Spain, as then, I will not have to pay roaming charges etc.

Sorry Les I really am not sure what the cost is only that it was far too expensive to have brought the one from England and use it here. We actually live out here now so did not really go into it too much after speaking to a neighbour who bought one but found it too expensive to use much

I enquired at an Orange shop and they will give you a plug in modem plus the 1st 3 months rental free if you sign an 18 month contract for 6 Euros per month. You then pay only 2 Euros a day for each day that you Log on.
This is dependant on there being 3G coverage at Roda and I am not sure on that so if anybody can help it would be appreciated.
I also noticed that Roda are renting Internet connections at 6 Euros per day.

Paul

Hi Paul
That sounds interesting, where was the Orange shop ?
I have just returned from Roda and was getting 3G come up on my phone (I am with 02 in England, but the phone automatically picked up Movistar in Spain). I do not know anything about it, so am not sure if that means it's available, or if the 3G is specific to any network. Can anyone tell us more about it ?
Where did you find out about Roda offerring internet connections at 6 euros a day ? I asked their customer services department and was told to go to Telephonica, who charge quite a bit for a monthly contract.

Hi Les,
3G is a generic term based on data speed and most mobile operators in Spain utilize a 3G network. Coverage is area dependent, but in my experience you can access the Moviestar 3G network in Roda. Your method of access and best price will be depend on:
1. The type of mobile phone you have.
2. Your current UK tariff.
3. Do you have data access in the UK.
4. Which UK network you are on.
5. Are you going to be spending most of your time in the UK or Spain.
6. Are you going to use a laptop or desktop computer.
In the best case scenario, you would be able to receive emails and browse the internet with no increase in your current monthly spend.
Interestingly enough there are systems available to allow you to remotely monitor your UK or Spanish Property whilst you are away utilizing your mobile phone and data connection!
For any further information, please PM me.
