That stands to reason that for a new airport one offers reduced landing fees. However as this is Spain and current hostility to Ryanair and others it might not be on the cards to do this. If they had any businees sense they would have been all over Ryanair whilst they were having their argument with Alicante but nobody from Corvera went anywhere near them. So does this give you confidence they are business persons? Time will tell

The plot thickens. It seems we are all going to be using Corvera by summer 2014!!!!!!! http://www.tumbit.com/news/articles/7462-aena-ready-to-take-control-of-corvera-airport.html

Try reading the latest article onCorvera Airport from "!murciatoday". Whilst it states similar headline to tumbit its conclusion is no so rosy for Corvera.
The bottom line is there will be a lot more posturing and chest beating but my money, at the moment, is that Corvera is dead in the water. Anyone got a shovel to start the burial process?

It's true that an airport offering lower landing fees would take the airline business, who will just go to the most cost effective one. The problem is that this is unlikely to be Corvera. The 200 million euros which has been loaned by the banks was based on a business plan which presumed that Corvera would carry about two and a half times the flights and customers that San Javier currently has. So it's unlikely that any operator could take the current San Javier patronage on lower landing fees and make the whole thing stack up to pay back the banks. That's the problem with using private finance to build public infrastructure.

It's unlikely that Corvera will ever open as a commercial airport. It will just end up as a big white elephant.
When you read the Spanish press on this subject the reality soon becomes clear.
Saying that, Corvera is just one of a few airports with a similar fate in Spain. Airports built when there was more money than sense.

I hope it never opens. It's further away from all the coastel resorts than St Javier, . and the N to S roads are not good They must have been nuts to build it inland

Justin you could argue that the construction kept a lot of people in employment at little cost to the tax payer as I understand most of it was EU money like alot of theAutovias

Locals (Brits) on the ground in Los Alcazares and surrounding area appear to doubt that Corverra will open any time soon. I am not sure where/what the source of the info was - but they do regular trips to Sa-Javier currently so would have their ear to the ground.

It is interesting to note that easyJet are now taking bookings to San Javier airport up to mid June 2014 so therefore easyJet will not be using Corvera at least up till then, if ever!
One must assume that Corvera will be yet another unused airport in Spain

You need to be reading the local and national Spanish press to become aware of what is happening with the airport as there have been 2 significant announcements over the last week and it isnt really fair to put a link in to another site, but the following link is to Lavidad newspaper and just use Goole Translate to read
http://www.laverdad.es/murcia/v/20130907/region/ballesta-dice-tramite-para-20130907.html
Normally it doesnt matter where the flght is booked to if an airline changes, or is forced to change, the destination airport

Whilst the Spanish press are publishing that Corvera will open early(ish) 2014 I do not believe that the likes of easyJet, Jet2 et al will take bookings up to, in the case of Jet2 September 2014, and then have to refund the money for these bookings if MJV will be closed. Unlike Spanish businesses, International business do care about costs and with the allegedy small profits from flights they can not afford to have the hassel of changing destinations and all the additional costs involved with moving from one airport to another.
As most 'low cost' airlines do not really care where they fly to just so long as they can fill the seats this might mean that they will look elsewhere to fly their planes. This then might mean that both airports will fail as the airlines will not use either as Corvera will probably charge higher landing fees than MJV so will go elsewhere.
Maybe both airports will operate for a short time and then at maybe the end of the season move from "a" to "b". It just gets messier and messier.
Only time will tell and no matter how much hot air is expended here what will happen will happen

Actually this isnt quite correct because if commercially the situation is forced on the carrier, if for example AENA end up operating the airport, possibly in some form of partnership with the current franchise owner, as the press seems to now indicate, San Javier will close, then I asume that the person will have the choice of a refund or transfer or even fly to Alicante, even further than San Javier
We will only know when something is announced formally

I think they are hanging on until the US/Nato need full use of the airbase after they've attacked Syria. As a 1st strike base all the private traffic would have to stop, everyything moves to Corvera, Aena get nothing; job done.

Surely the fact that EasyJet have published their flight schedules up to early Summer 2014 has little relevance to Corvera's possible opening. EasyJet will have agreed terms and a have contract with San Javier and will only consider a change at some further time in the future, if indeed there is ever a choice available.
Inspectahome - you say ..."we will only know when something is announced formally"... I wish it were that simple in Spain. I reckon we will only really know when planes actually start landing there!

Yes Chris a balanced report - as far as it goes - but one that leaves many unanswered questions eg where will the €70m come from. Justin posted earlier here that he did not think Corvera would ever open, and l must say that the €numbers are so mind-bogglingly big now that it does make it hard to see how the airport can work economically. In the past Roy from lnspectahome (who acts for clients letting properties to staff working at the airport) has invariably been the source of promising news on what's happening there, and his insight would be welcome.

It is often difficult for me to comment as Bradders quite rightly points out I do let to airport staff and have been accused in the past of having some bias because it would undoubtably benefit my sales and rental businesses
I seem to have spent years working in the background with this project, meetings with the airlines and operational staff for accomodation and I am not sure what happened but at one point last year I had accomodation allocated for senior operational people that ended up being cancelled, believe me thos is very frustrating
Visits by the way from not just Eurpoean airlines, the clue is in the airport name and mission, an INTERNATIONAL airport for the region
My business luckily does not rely on the airport openning, we had a strong Summer rental period with people enjoying the resort
My own view remains that they will open the airport ready for the main season next year and that it will be based on some from of joint agreement between the current franchisee and AENA, which then allow them to close San Javier and not have to worry about the €70m compensation
The T&C's allow the airlines to transfer flights because it is on the basis that commercially were outside of their control and of course they can offer a refund but as already said the discount airlines base their flight schedules on price
If you read about the airport the facts are that the region believes that they need a strategically located internal airport and San Javier just isnt it, yes a great holiday airport destination but not an airport or the future
I believe that you will find that the Murcia Today pieces are based around the main press articles, esppecially of you translate the articlesa and compare them
