Hanging things on walls and other DIY tips

Hi fellow Jardiners,
I am starting this thread to try to find out the problems and /or solutions that people are having hanging things on walls. I know that there seems to be a problem with the way the walls are constructed , I read somewhere that there is a gap between the plasterboard and the brickwork , is this on all walls or just the internal one's.
There are pictures in this forum which show cabinets , pictures , and curtain rails on walls so there must be a selection of solutions to the problem,
the biggest problem seems to be hanging a TV because of the weight involved , has anyone done this or had it done ? . let us all know the size of the tv and the solution if you can.

This is a topic which I think we are all interested in, so come on rack your brains.

Internal walls

OK hear is my take on this.

Most new builds in the UK are now dry lined which means that the inside walls are finished by battening the wall and then fixing plasterboards to the battens by using a fixing method known as dot and dab which basically is a way of gluing the boards to the wall, then a thin skim of plaster is put on top. This method was introduced as it is quicker to complete the construction takes less time for the property to dry and adds insulation value as there is an air gap between the inner board and the outer wall.

As the apartments at Condado are of concrete construction they may well have used a similar way of finishing the inside walls?

If this is the case the problem in fixing heavy things like TV’s is problematical as if the location you intend to fix the bracket is where there is no existing batten behind the boards to securely fix to, you will not achieve a strong enough fixing to support the wait of such a heavy object and although you may think you have achieved this it is likely to fail at some point in the future with expensive consequences, also you have to be careful wiring or piping haven’t been laid just behind the boards in the air gap.

It is possible to check for these and strengthen the wall area depending on the individual circumstances, but someone who knows what they are doing should do it. Until I come out next week to have a look for my self I don’t know the answer for sure but will be happy to update this post on my return.

My experience is that the internal faces of the external walls are dry lined as PGM describes and the internal partition walls are stud wall construction.  However, unlike in the UK they seem to use double thickness plasterboard so you get around 25mm thickness before you are into the cavity. 

I've also found that they use plastic pipes for all the plumbing run inside the wall cavities so an electronic pipe/cable detector aint no use for locating them!  Good news is that the pipes are in the cavity, not chased into the plasterboard.

Drill carefully!!!

If you look back on the forum photos [2007ish] you can see that the construction of the apartments is a concrete frame then infilled with brickwork, but not as we know it, their bricks are hollow or honeycombed, then dot and dab plasterboard with rendering to the outside.
