A number of people have installed iron grills on windows and doors, probably to help defeat the burglars.  We are also concerned about this but have recently installed electric shutters on our patio doors, window locks, and secure glazing on the utility area.  Aesthetically this looks better and lends to the appearance of the block as the shutters match those already in  place.  The shutters have the added advantages of keeping the apartment cooler in the summer months and preventing  fading of furniture.

We found that our option compared favourably price wise with figures we  have seen to supply and fit iron grills.  We will be happy to pass on the details of our contact - he speaks English.  Please email and follow the instructions on the spam filter.

I have posted photos of grills and electric shutters (1-1-07).  You can make up your own minds which you prefer.

I feel the electric shutters offer a better solution for the reasons stated by Mindclinic and have ordered the same using his contact as per his recent post.

The effect of sunlight on furniture will cause fading and premature ageing on leather and soft fabrics and as such I feel this is a much better solution than grills.

With refernce to the open (vulnerable) area outside the kitchen... on the ground floor does anyone think it would be a good idea for the brickwork to be extended all the way round... this would surely look better and be more secure than the glass option
