I managed to find out that if the contractors schedule goes to plan the first
flights will be commencing from April 2011.
Way behind the original date predicted but better late than never.

Hi arnoldnedith
Can you tell us where you got yourinformation from? The last news I heard was that the Mayor announced a couple of months back that the new airport will still be going ahead but it might take a little longer than originally planned due to the economy. So your info sounds fesiable.
Can't wait for it to open that's fair run from Alicante.

Just read this on the The Costa Calida Informer online;
Issue 156:

WELCOME to the FRONT PAGE |
Airport Could Be Finished By Xmas 2010 |
The new international airport in Corvera is running five years behind schedule if the finishing date, estimated by the airport’s future director Mariano Menor, is correct. Much to the delight of the opposing political party Murcia’s regional President, Ramon Luis Valcarcel, announced in 2004 that the airport would be finished in 2005, a statement of which he is constantly being reminded by Teresa Rosique, a regional M.P.
Several factors have delayed the airport, including arguments over the compulsory purchase of land, hiccups and modifications to the project and then of course the onset of the recession, which has led investors to change their minds about its validity, causing a subsequent finance problem. At the moment the outline structures of the terminal and the control tower are clearly identifiable and work is progressing, albeit at a very slow rate.
The progress of the airport now depends on the banks approving a loan of €160 million. Mariano Menor stated, “We are not moving at the speed we would like to be moving at, but we are still working and as soon as the finance comes in we hope to get back on track and, if all goes to plan, we should be finished by the end of 2010.” |

The airport buildings, runway and control tower may be finished but it will be at least 6 months after that before you see any flights. The Spanish airport authorities must be satisfied that all safety procedures, flight and navigation systems and staff training are completed to their standards and everything is working as it should be and that all terminal staff are fully trained to operate all the airport equipment safely.
Cheers
