Hertz Car Hire

We've been looking for car hire for the summer and find Hertz (who use Solmar) to be one of the cheapest. The only downside I can see to using them is that there are additional charges for the second driver and that you're liable for the excess which can be up to 600€. We've had cars through Solmar before without any problems, but not booking it through Hertz direct.

Obviously the additional costs with DYS & Economy etc include the 2nd driver and no excess but Hertz seem cheaper if there is only one driver.

Has anyone booked through these? Were there any more hidden charges (apart from the fuel)? Has anyone taken out a yearly excess liability insurance to cover themselves and did they experience any problems showing this to Car Hire companies?

I got fed up forking extra out for windscreen and tyres, so finally bought yearly cover which also covers up to £2,000 excess.   We have used Auriga Crown through Do you Spain.  I told them I did not require windscreen and tyre cover, they took 300 euros deposit which was returned within 24 hrs of returning car.  (Can't be sure of how quickly as got stuck at Airport due to snow in England). 

Can't comment on how good the policy is (and hope not to have to) as not had to use it.  One year cover has cost us the same as insurance for windscreen and tyre cover would have on one hire. 

By the way, hired car for 3 weeks and got full/full for petrol.

We have booked through Hertz, having used them last year, A couple of things, Hertz now ask for the car to be returned with an empty fuel tank plus hiring from San Javier is cheaper than Alicante ( we are flying into Alicante unfortunately). On the plus side using Hertz Advance is cheaper than Hertz and we received an extra discount for using a Mastercard.

The Hertz Advance part of their website was playing up when we booked but we rang and they honoured the quote.
