I know trains have been mentioned previously on the forum but this is just a quick note to mention them again for new members. We used the train from Alhama to Murcia today for a day out during the bad weather. Murcia is a nightmare to drive around. I have to say all round it was an excellent way to travel.

3.50 euros each return on a very clean and comfortable train that runs every hour at 11 minutes past the hour. We even had a nice milky coffee and pack of biscuits each for 1.20 and a very friendly station operator as well. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Whilst on the platform at Murcia station got talking to a guy from Yorkshire  who lives here and told me that you can get a train from Murcia to Alicante for 3.50 also that goes past Alicante airport (walking distance). Might be worth considering if at any time in the future we buy a car and leave it at CDA.

The public transport system seems very good and extremely good value for money.

Agree trains are very good but it is 3hrs Alhama to Murcia and unfortunately last train Murcia to Alicante is around 8:45pm

The costs are very good compared to UK and reliablity is good.

If you are a train spotter dont take photos on stations? you may get arrested.

With increasing car hire costs trains could be a solution.

Can not remember name of Station near Alicante airport but it could be a hike but not with luggage?

Hi,

Alhama station is on the right as you drive into the town. Just before the bridge that goes up and over the railway line turn right up the side of it and follow the road until you come to a left turn under a bridge and then you are there. Parking is free all day.

Regarding the time to Alicante from Murcia, I was told it was under an hour and you get off the train two stops before Alicante where you can see the watch tower at the airport. I am not saying the train is a perfect alternative to the car and with Corvera on the horizon, there will be other options to consider. However, in the summer months car hire is getting increasingly expensive and with the cheapness and ease of the train, it has to be considered with reasonable flight times.

This train actually runs Aguilas-Murcia-Aguilas so if you want to go South it is easy to do.  Aguilas can be a nice day out, particularly on the first Sunday of the month as they have a  very good flea market on the front (just across from the Tourist Info office) 10am-2pm and you can visit the castle, but that closes as 1pm and doesn't open again until 4pm.  The train also goes to Lorca - some of the return trains from Murcia terminate at Lorca so don't panic when you can't see a Murcia-Aguilas train on the departure board, look for Lorca.

The Murcia train also goes from Totana (just over the bridge on the left hand side before you reach the large roundabout) and there is plenty of free parking.  You need to cross the lines to the opposite side for the train North (Murcia) or stay on the platform of the booking office to go south.

The last time we went Totana to Murcia was May last year and we paid a lot more than 3.5 Euros each return, I seem to recall it was around 21 Euros for 2 adults and 2 children of 9 who were classed as adult fare - it was on a Saturday - perhaps that makes a difference???
