July 2 (Telegraph) -- Spain's debt crisis may force the country to tap the EU-IMF rescue fund over the next two to three months and set off a political storm, according a confidential report by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
"There is a serious risk that Spain have to make use of Europe's €750bn (£618bn) aid packet," said the document, obtained by Spanish newspaper Expansion. The bank declined to comment.
The report said it was not yet clear whether weaker states on the periphery of the eurozone will be able to raise money to fund their debt needs at viable rates on the global markets. Any request for a bail-out by Spain would be extremely controversial, potentially bringing down the government.
The bank said it was possible that Italy would also require a rescue or that there would be a total divorce between Germany and France, though these were viewed as "extremely unlikely"
outcomes.
Spain's premier Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero yesterday proclaimed "his full confidence in the strength and solvency" of the country after Moody's threatened to downgrade Spanish debt by up to two notches on the grounds that fiscal austerity would undercut growth. Moody's then twisted the knife deeper, cutting ratings on five Spanish regions.
Spain's treasury sold €3.5bn of five-year debt successfully, but at a stiff rate of 6.6pc.

Interesting post Dave, my only problem is I have believed for too long now that the press 'MAKE the News' rather than just 'REPORT' it as they used to, so I take every new press release with a pinch of salt. The worrying thing is that the TV will now read the report and enhance it to make 'Great TV' also, so eventually they will probably cause it to come true.

This is one we all need to sit and contemplate on, yet another reason for hating Spain.

Me and my husband are going to sit on our terrace overlooking the mountains and the blue skies, open a bottle of El Molino Red wine (1.10e from Mercadona) have some fresh olives, watch the Brazil and Holland game and review how bad our life is....... NOT.

I think it is interesting because it comes from an internal Bank advisory piece and not some sensationalist Daily Mail reporter trying to make headlines.

Pam i seem to have hit a raw nerve? I dont believe there is any reason to hate Spain from this article, i think you will find most of Europe is pretty well screwed at the moment. But im glad you are so happy with your life and keen to share it with us and i am very happy that your cheap wine dulls the pain for you... I just hope you werent supporting Brazil or that could have really messed up your perfect weekend!
