Definitely is food for thought and a great concern for many.
What the article does not mention is much of the decrease in passenger numbers must come from the pull out of Monarch into Murcia who are also now concentrating their flights into Alicante.
Of course a price war from the airports could be good for passengers but the Spanish are notoriously bad in responding in this way.
Murcia really does need to decide on its priorities but as San Javier and Alicante are state owned and Corvera is private it would be difficult to have a defined strategy.
As I m at Roda I m personally hoping San Javier continues to operate but knowing Spain I can't see Corvera opening for some time yet, not one of the airlines seems to even have it in their plans for the moment. longer term, hopefully it will be good for the whole region but landing fees and incentives will be a big issue. Essentially Valencia are subsidising Ryanair to bring passengers in.

I was informed by somebody with resonable knowledge of the way that the airlines operate is that the reason that Monarch and BMI Baby pulled out of San Javier was beacause they have to renew a 5 year contract that would then lock them into that airport and with the potential opportunity of Corvera they were not willing to do this
The other key point is that this airport is not part of the national AENA group where prices are controlled and nationalised so they will be able to be more creative with their fees
Anyone that has flown into San Javier will know that depending on the wind direction it can be a fairly restricted areafor air space, especially when you have to circle over La Manga so even the 2nd runway may not help with all of the traffuc problems
I suppose the last point to remember is that the plan is that the pkan for CORVERA is as a international hub, not just for European flights offering the airline the ability to trasit to other worldwinde destinations
Ther are ow a lot more workers on the aorport site with invcreased activity levels

Thanks for that Roy. I understand that anyone who owns property close to San Javier airport will not be in favour of the airport closing to civilian traffic, but if Corvera Airport opens up the immediate area to international travel it can only be a good thing - especially for those who want to rent their property.
Good to hear activity at the Airport is on the up.

Hi all,
I have been told (from a reasonably reliable source) that they are cracking away with the airport and that the new completion date is end October 2011. There'll be some testing and safety checks etc etc after that and then it should open for business in early 2012.
I know we'd all like it there yesterday, but at least they are now getting on with it. With a bit of luck this will be a help to us all to either get some decent rentals and/ or better access to our own 'Places in the Sun'.
Regards,
I.

I dont really understand where the Airport and rentals come together here
Roda is closer to San Javier airport than Corvera will be to the new airport and I dont think for one minute San Javier airport has any bearings what so ever on Roda rentals
Just a little concerned people might be waiting for something that wont materialise
Strategic location etc restaurants, bars, beaches, CLUBHOUSE, etc
Then presentation, cleanliness, things to do, follow etc etc etc
But nothing to do with AIRPORT sorry

The hope is the new airport will bring new investment into the area. New investment will, hopefully, include more amenities, restaurants, bars etc. That will make the area more attractive for tourists to holiday (not that the area is not beautiful enough already). Especially weekend golfers who do want to be near the airport but are not bothered about a beach. More rentals. It could also bring in more buyers which could then lead to our Clubhouse. I know that includes 'hopes', 'hopefully/s' and 'could/s' but the possibilities are out there and there are other developments who don't even have those at the moment. There is definitely a connection. We'll just have to wait and see .

Hi Carlos,
I take your point(s), and Anita's too re facilities/ rentals/ hopes/ woulds/ coulds/ investment etc.
I think that 'drive time'/ accessibility does play a part in deciding where people go on holiday. When you land in a foreign country the last thing you want is a big journey to your final destination (and different people have different versions of what makes a 'big' journey!). As Anita says, golfers will be attracted to a ten minute cab ride to a resort just to play golf, though you are right that a Clubhouse will be needed also to get them to come in the first place. In time Corvera village will develop to meet the needs of tourists, just as Los Alcazares has....
Roda does benefit from having San Javier so close, no question about it. The whole area does. Can you imagine Roda/ Los Alcazares without San Javier and people having to fly in to Alicante and drive down?
You are right though, lets not get our hopes up TOO high on something that will take time to materialise.
Rgds,
I.

The airport will definately attract more people and know as a visitor to Roda having San Javier near by was a plus point. The fact that Corvera airport will replace San Javier can only be exciting for us owners at Corvera because this is coupled by a better laid out resort.....The village in Corvera has such a Spanish feel and one we hope will stay that way. Only a year and and we'll all be laughing at all these negative posts.

Great first post Sharonx............ So glad that you'll be laughing at the negative posts next year. I, however will still be crying over my lost life savings stolen by a crooked, lying builder.

You can't blame the down turn of the Spainish economy on the builders or can you!?
I think calling them crooked is a bit exagerated ......at least we have properties I would have called the developers who do a run without giving them their properties Crooks.
If everyone got on with completion we would have the 500 we need for the club house to be built so lets hope theres less moaning and more happy Completions.
From a happy Corvera resident who is looking forward to another well earned break to the Carrascoy mountains!
