Just back from weekend and inspected airport progress.  Lots of activity - ground moving lorries/diggers all over.  Sides going on the terminal building.  When shift finishes the Corvera road is a constant stream of traffic.  Was told Corvera cafes are doing well before shifts start !

Looks like the airport will not open until next after all though.

Does anyone know if the road acess is open again across the A30 from Roldan via Los Martinez to Corvera yet?

I haven't tried it myself but I understand from a neighbour that the Los Martinez /Corvera road is now open. Fingers crossed as I was concerned that the Simply Networking article seemed to suggest that the main link to the airport was only a ceremonial opening and that it would not open until the airport so feared that this would also apply to the Los Marinez Corvera link.

I'm in Corvera on Sunday so will be trying the route and will let you know.

Just to confirm that the road from Corvera to Los Martinez is now open as suggested a couple of days ago. Although I tried at night it seemed that the road from Corvera was as it used to be until a couple of kms from Los Martinez where there are a couple of new roundabouts which link to A30 and also the new roads to the airport which are not yet usable.

I'm afraid the following article from the Sunday Express doesn't make for very happy reading it mentions the newCorvera airport ....

DESERTED WHITE-ELEPHANT AIRPORTS COSTING SPAIN BILLIONS
Story Image

Huesca terminal is not expecting its next commercial flight until January

Sunday June 5,2011
By William Bond

GHOST white-elephant airports in Spain rarely see any flights and cost billions, it has been revealed.

Of the 48 regional commercial airports built in the debt-ridden country in less than 20 years, only 11 make a profit.

Huesca, opened in 2007 for tourists heading to the central Pyrenees, was a personal initiative by a local politician. He hoped it would bring prosperity to the region.

Its last commercial flight took off in April and the next is not due to land until January 2012. The airport, just 45 miles from another at Zaragoza, lost six million euros last year. Its shops are closed and the site is deserted apart from a small staff. There is a lone security guard and an air-traffic controller is on stand-by for private planes.

Economics expert Germa Bel i Queralt told leading Madrid daily newspaper El Pais: “Spain doesn’t have a transportation policy but a brand policy. We dazzle the world with the best terminals.

“We wanted to teach the world a lesson and here we are with the highest unemployment rate and AENA, the aviation agency that loses the most money in the world.” Castellon, on the east coast, opened in March within 100 miles of three thriving airports and despite the fact that no aircraft can arrive because it is awaiting landing permits. The restriction is likely to remain for at least eight months.

New Corvera airport in Murcia is unlikely to open at all. The regional government insisted work should go ahead although the site is within 19 miles of flights to San Javier and 80 miles from Alicante, Spain’s sixth biggest airport.

Ciudad Real, built as a second airport for Madrid although it is 118 miles away, handles just 100,000 passengers a year, and staff work three months on and three months off. Inaugurated in 2008, it was a failure from day one, despite being forecast to welcome 2.5million passengers in its first five years.

As part of a series of measures to try to pull Spain out of its deep economic problems, Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero promised partially to privatise its airports.

Not like the Express to slag off anything in Europe is it seeing as they are leading a petition to 'get us out of Europe' ?

The posting makes grim reading but It may not be all doom and gloom for Corvera Airport as it is not going to be opertated by AENA, I think I read somewhere that this will give the airport greater ability to cut landing fees and attrach low budget airlines. Lower landig fees and flexible flights times are what budget airlines need, its there life blood, they will go where it is cheaper.

As AENA opertate most of the other commercial airports in Spain this will give Corvera an advantage to undercut San Javier.

Corvera's competition is really from San Javier, not Alicante. It was originally a military only airport and the military still operate there to my knowledge. They place restrictions on times of flights and capacity too because of the military requirments.

We shall see what happens but sometimes poor journalist research paints a worse picture and only time will tell.

Lets see what the next 12 months brings.
