Exactly what I had thought, although more on the side of the airlines (there is another airline who I have read about intending on withdrawing flights to San Javier) not wanting to be tied/contracted to San Javier airport when Corvera opens.
Just remembered the other airline - Air Berlin. This message was last edited by Anita on 30/07/2010.

The problem is, this is Spain, and Corvera Airport could be 2 or more years away yet. If Ryan Air leave San Javier, the costs of all the other flights to and from SJ airport will rise, it is simple supply and demand economics. I personally think RYAN AIR should introduce a surcharge to passengers on Murcia Flights, it would only need to be 3 euros per flight as they were only asking for 300,000 advertising support and they carried over 100,000 passengers. I personally would have no problem paying this as it is far less than having to drive up to Alicante and park etc etc. Both sides seem to be sticking to their guns so the main loosers are the flying public. Come on Ryan Air help us out....

I agree with you that it is unlikely Corvera will actually be open for business much before 2012 so pulling out of Murcia now does not make sense for that reason.
Ryanair tend to make decisions based purely on a business sense so I m afraid appealing to the their better judgement may fall on deaf ears. They have recently done a deal with Valencia after threatening to pull out, they do wield huge power as you would expect from anyone who flies in that many passengers to boost the local economy. they certainly owe no loyalty to the many home owners in the region, as they have prooved before.
You may be right about the 3 euros but they take the view that it is both unfair and not viable for Murcia to support purely local airlines or businesses, that is a very large principal at stake here.
Jet 2 may provide some alternatives but have a poor reputation on other forums so being stuck with higher charges or the Alicante run look increasingly more likely. Yes we lose again.

Just another thought.
RyanAir may not pull out of San Javier completely. This is normal RyanAir practice!! What they tend to do is close down unprofitable routes in the winter.
We live in Spain (1/2 way between Alicante and San Javier) and always use San Javier in pfererence. However, we have to fly Alicante/Newquay (Cornwall) to visit my mother-in-law, as they have never flown from SJ. The first year they ran this service is was all year. However, last year they stopped the winter service (when Cornwall council messed up and forgot to get a CAA license for the airport when they took it over from teh RAF). Resumed again for the Summer and are once again not going to operate the route in the Winter. Not profitable enough.
So maybe it won't be as gloomy as we all surmise and that the Summer service will continue.

Ryan Air routes to Murcia back on line from March from:
Liverpool, Birmingham, East Midlands, Glasgow, Luton (plus Stanstead and Dublin which they've been flying all winter.
Nothing yet for Bournemouth though.
My beloved Alicante/Newquay back too at HUGE expense.
See, I told you they'd be back!
