Hi all,
R&A rules have been developed over many years to make golf fair and equal to all. So please dont muck about with them. The rules on etiquette are sometimes there to speed the game up. So abide by them. The course at CdA was always going to be tough, so please leave it to Olagolf to manage Instead learn to hit straight. Or.......rather than taking the driver out of the bag and going for the "BIG SHOT" why not drop down to your 3 or 5 wood. Even if you used an iron and kept it on the fairway you'd still save shots over going in the rough. Course management!!! But no-one wants to hear that.
I played there not long ago and got a 59...........................then on the back 9 got.......a lot
Use old balls. Play the game to your best. But most of all enjoy the company, scenery, and the pint in the Clover. Be thankful you have people like Barry, Kev and others who do a great job organising golf events, and keeping us all informed.
Yeah we all want to win. Just when I'm over there its to de-stress. That means enjoyment before winning.

Thanks Frank
You have summed it up perfectly.
I don't want to be the one to go tell the head greenkeeper to make his championship course easier!
He plays it himself and suffers as the rest of us do.

I am pretty sure that the moaners on this thread will get the big gun out off every tee.
Eaiset way not to lose a ball is hit it straight off the tee, go with a longer club into the green..
This is the reason why the handicap system is in place. I play of 5, i wouldnt want anyone getting a free drop because they lost there ball in the grass
I have lost plenty of balls on CDA, all down to poor course management.. Try leaving your driver in the apartment when you play next time.. if yuor a 12 handicap yuo should be ably to hit a half decent shot off the tee with a 3 iron / rescue. Playing off the yellows isnt a overly long course.. you should be ably to plot your way round and position the ball to allwo yuo to use amid iron into the green
course management is the answer, not cutting grass to make it easier
and if your unsure, hit 2 off the tee..
again its down to course management. 9 time sout of 10 if you hit your 2nd off the tee you will find your first.

Before everyone turns this into a golf advice clinic I believe the main point was the time taken to play a round which is significantly contributed to by the rough.
I don't think anyone stated people should get a free drop or that the rough should be trimmed to a couple of inches. It was more what can be done to stop the rounds taking 5 - 6 hours. I agree ettiquette needs to be followed which would assist things.
Course management is all well and good and I agree all serious golfers should have each hole thought out in advance. Unfortunately people on high handicaps don't always have the distance or the accuracy to enable them the luxery of using a long iron or rescue.
Personally I'm out there to enjoy myself and enjoy hitting a driver off the tee. While I totally understand that for some the enjoyment is directly linked to the final score, I'm happy to enjoy each good shot. And for me hitting every second drive down the fairway is still more enjoyable than hitting every fairway with a hybrid or a long iron. It may not be sensible to some but everyone approaches the game differently.
In saying that I'm happy to scratch a hole if I can't find my ball as what I don't find fun is sitting on a tee for ages waiting to play.

Some people believe Golf is about fun, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.......

Interesting thread as I hate slow play.
I play off 28 simply because that's the most i'm allowed, but i still manage to go round most par 72s in less than 60 shots with only 10 putts required, that's
18 tee offs, 12 provisional tee offs, 10 x 3rd shots (could be 2nd or 3rd), 6 x 4th shots, 3 x 5th shots, 10 putts.
Once i lose my 2nd ball on a hole i give up that hole due it's poor design with the rough and fairways the wrong way round according to my shots, and despite all this i usually end up waiting for the so called ''professionals'' who never look like they're having much fun, probably coz they partnered me don't know why they're upset as i allow their score to count on every hole ...............

Agree with smv . there are 2 ways to play golf.
1) the sensible way . 3/5 wood off the tee . 6/7 safety iron. chip on. 2 putt.
however as much as we try this we usually put the 3/5 wood in a worse and shorter place than a driver
we hit the 6 iron safety in the water.
we chip into the bunker not the green.
we smoke a hamlet
we 4 putt.
But hey as long as you didnt throw the clubs in the deepest part of the lakeafter a couple in the rub a dub i bet you have arranged next weeks tee off time.
2) you go for every shot . you lose 3 sleeves of brand new pro v1's and rip up your card on the 7th.
But after 6 beers in the rub a dub you cant wait to go again.
A good walk spoilt- i dont think so. at least we got out of doing the washing up!
