Teleast Cable and Internet

Following the email sent out on 22nd June about Cable TV, Internet and Telephone installation at Roda I decided on my recent visit to visit the Teleast office near the 525 hotel.

On my first visit, I was told that a Satelite Dish woud be necessary for TV and also a second one for Internet, prior to the fibre optic becoming fully operative. Having found that I could hide a dish on my roof...

On my second visit I spoke to a British lady who said that all I need is a cable box and duly made the arrangements.

Within two days one of their technicians appeared with the recomended cable box, plugged it into the TV socket and promptly provided 110 channels, at least half of them in english, basically all the freview channels and several more.

The cost for the box and installation is 50 Euro's plus 21 euro's a month.

Internet and Phone will not be available until September (at earliest on Phase 3) when the fibre optic cables sholud all be fixed. This will make the cable TV more efficient but I did not have any problems with teh cabe box whilst I was there.

With regards to Internet/Email one option is to buy a Spanish SIM card for your Smart Phone. YOIGO apparently works well on phase 3, a Phone SIM costs 20 euro's with 20 Euro's of calls/texts/internet included.

All you need is an unlocked smartphone to put the cards in. This would be a good option form many people. The Phone House (Carphone Warehouse) in the Del Mar centre were very helpful. The also do dongles and wifi dongles but these may be more expensive than the TelEast option.

One key advantage with Teleast is that the service an be turned off whilst you are not there (for a fee).

Just returned from Roda and got the internet installed in phase 2 apartment during July from Teleast.

Installation cost 50e and even though they had trouble feeding cables down from roof to ground floor they stayed until internet was up & going.  Good job & quick and reliable, very pleased with Teleast.

Hi peeps

Just a some quick points to bear in mind.

1. In theory - roof aerials for internet connections are not allowed on Roda.
On Phase 2 we have an amnesty that allows people to do it as Teleast are still trying to sort out how to use the cable system.
This should be up and runnimg throughout the resort by the end of September (ha ha)
Once it is working Teleast have agreed to convert everyone to the cable system for free and remove all the ugly aerials.

2. Bear in mind that if you are on the ground or first floor it would be polite to ask the people whose wall you are using on the roof if it is okay to mount your aerial there. Most people don't bother to ask and the top floor apartment owners are (rightly imho) getting a bit fed up when they find that there are 3 or 4 internet aerials spoiling their view!

3. Make sure you pay the right price to Teleast - they are trying to over-charge some people.
There is a special deal for Roda owners.
€21 pm for TV and €15 pm for internet. And if you take both there is a an additional €5 discount.
They have been naughtyily charging some people the full wack for internet of €21 or €22  pm.

Now why we pay so much on Roda I'm not quite sure when they advertise on their wesbite that TV is only €12 pm for clients in Torrevieja but doesn't quote a price for elsewhere. http://www.teleast.info

I did understand from the Teleast engineer that Roda gets more channels than normal, maybe this accounts for the extra cost.

I haven't had the Internet connected, i will wait until the FibreOptic is fixed, meanwhile I will be trying out a Spanish Sim Card on an unlocked smart phone or finding a bar with free WIFI.

One question that I was asked is how would people who rent out charge for Internet Access? Paricularily as the charge is by volume of data not internet speed as in the UK.

I think my reply to people on holiday who get hung up about Internet Acces will be 'you're on holiday'...

I use an Orange Dongle and depending on where you are in the resort the signal is variable.

In block 90 on phase 3 right by the 1st green I get good speed - about 3mb.
In the middle of phase 2 some days I only get dial-up speed of 56kb! PANTS.
Last week I was connecting at 1.5 Mb.

As for charging - Teleast is for speed and charged per mb download.

I know one person who wants to charge €20 pw for his wifi from Teleast in his apartment.
Don't think he's had any takers yet!

On the Orange dongle it is a flat rate per day and not cheap at €3.50 pd. I've not yet had a client want to hire it!
Other dongles (ie Yoigo) are an amount per day plus a charge if you go over your the limit

And so far in 5 years of renting only one person has said that wifi would have been nice.
I just direct people to the clubhouse or the many free bars with wifi.

I have just remembered reading in one of the free newspapers an article about the new internet shop that is located in the mall beside the Mercadona that they are hiring out dongles on a weekly basis.

This might be a better idea for someone on holidays for a week or two rather than the expense of buying dongle and topping up for month. Sorry I can't remember how much it cost but it could be in newspapers again.

Last year we tried about 6 times up in Dos Mares to get dongle but each time they were out of stock & coming in tomorrow!  Shop in square might be a better bet.

Bought printer ink from this shop during summer & it was cheaper than Wortens.

I am not sure there is any limit on downloads but keep a close eye on speed and connection. The satellite system they are still using can be very iffy.

I have complained for the umpteenth time about speed and connection, trouble is where else do you go as they have a virtual monopoly now on Roda other than back to expensive Movistar for phone and internet.

I did promise and update but been busy with family matters during and since our recent visit.

The Teleast cable box is working fine. The only issue being that I needed to go into the shop to get a smart card as some of the channels were switched to subscribers only. I was wondering what sort of box is needed to get cable channels without a subscription?

I’d bought a Yoigo SIM card on my last visit, but needed to get my smartphone unlocked (£10 at a dodgy shop in London). The phone worked fine, it’s 8 Euro’s for 500mb data. I have my ‘important’ email address copied to the phone ( I have others for junk mail) and this worked fine allowing emails and a bit of surfing.

I’ll go into the phone shop by the Plaza next time – He topped my Yoigo card up for me just before I left and was talking about dongles which can be used worldwide. Maybe a way around things – certainly more knowledgeable/less constrained than the Phone House!.

 I presume the Teleast cable box you refer to is the digibox that cost 50 euros plus 20 per month to access all the subscription channels available.

The only "cable" channels available without subscription are the basic Teleast package provided through the Roda satellite dish and now by a payment of approx 2 euros per month in your Entidad fees, these are BBC1 with East Midlands News, BBC2 Wales, ITV 1, ITV 2, SKY News, Eurosport in German and Media Shop a German shopping channel.

All Spanish free to air TV is digital and can be received via either a Freeview built in receiver or separate box if you have an old TV.

Again, no premium channels such as Gol, TDP or Canal + can be received. Though I believe Teleast are marketing Gol for an extra 20 per month

Definitely NOT cheap - at €5.50 PER DAY or €39 PER WEEK

This is effectively a dongle - it uses a SIM card. 8 people would not be able to use it at once

Has anyone got an update or can share an opinion how the Teleast TV and Internet services are running at Roda?  I need to get connected on Phase 3 in the New Year and wondered if Teleast is good value or not? 

Hugh-Man has Teleast internet and phone and as he has said he has called lots of times to get problems sorted out.

We Skype each other occasionally and most of the time it is ok but can be quite dodgy at times.

I also talk on the phone to him and this can be a real pain as it frequently cuts out.

This is round the midlle pool on Phase 2 where the signal is not that good due to being completely surrounded. I have a dongle which won't really work there at all although works perfectly well on Phase 3 (apartment right down near the golf course), so you may be okay there.

Hopefully someone else from Phase 3 will reply and let you know the state of play there.
