Has anyone opened a bank account yet? Any advice to share re the best deals out there?

My wife and I opened an account with Halifax Hispania (Malaga Branch) who are sister company of Halifax Bank UK where we also have accounts. I don't know which bank offers the best deal but can advise that transferring money between banks from UK sterling to Spain Euro is simple with the Halifax to Halifax Hispania and at no additional cost as they are sister banks. They have an English speaking team at their Madrid HQ and a team located at Halifax in the UK re application for a mortgages.

Are there any costs for the Spanish bank account? The information that I have from Barclays is that it costs Euro 20 per quarter to open with a deposit of 1500 and keeping a minimum balance of 1500 in the account.

Michael, The current account we have with Halifax Hispania does not incur any maintenance charges on the account as long as we maintain an average balance of 600 Euros. Also, any transfer of funds between our Halifax or Bank of Scotland accounts and Banco Halifax Hispania accounts are free of charge re conditions above!
