I have spoken to 2 sky tv engineers (in the UK) and they have informed me that sky are going to close the sat signal to Spain - has anyone else heard these rumours? I am thinking about getting sky tv but am not sure whether to bother now or not. Has anyone got any views or comments on this subject.

Currently, they cannot "shut-down" the satellite system which we receive in Spain as it is classed as "over-spill", (something which cannot be avoided or prevented by the company involved!)
I still pay my subscription (in the UK) to Sky and therefore, (without being attached to a UK landline), am still able to receive the signal and the vast majority of channels on offer. You need to be still registered at a UK address in order to do this.
At the moment, until the Spanish Government agree to install their own satellite which WILL receive the Sky signal (a great expense is involved), then we have to use which is currently on offer!
Do not be swayed by the engineers, Sky WANT the Spanish Government to employ their system and will do anything within their powers to stop the Brits enjoying Sky! Thus, the Brits (who are responsible for bringing vast amounts of revenue into this country) will lobby the government in order that they provide it!
Hope this helps,
Lorraine (I'm watching CSI) Braid.

Sorry if I appear thick! but does that mean I can get sky at Thalasa without paying a subcription?
So what equipment do I need then? Can I bring a spare box I have from the UK? Do I need another viewing card? Assume I will need a dish also but is that contentious as not agreed by the community yet?
Since I can't get any other TV until the new mast is installed at Mojacar, it would be good if I can get sky sorted out.
Thanks.

Hi Lindaw,
You do not have to pay any subscription charges to watch Sky television in Spain. You do, however, have to have a satellite dish and a skybox installed. This will give you a limted amount of sky channels for a "one-off" installation charge, (approximately 450-550€).
Should you wish, you can bring your skycard from home and install it in your skybox giving you access to more channels. You will of course, still have to subscribe to Sky back home in the UK or Ireland.
I know that there will be certain individuals who would prefer for "dishes" to be removed, but I feel that it is your choice, and your choice alone.
Regards,
Lorraine Braid.

The following information was posted yesterday on the general forum by Maria de Castro (Spanish Consumer Lawyer) in reponse to someone wanting to put up a dish to receive English channels on a community where Spanish channels are already received - Similar to Thalsassa.
If the installation of a satellite dish "gets to be expressly forbidden, you can challenge the legality of that as you have got a right to enjoy telecommunications in your home."
"If you are asking for extra items you would just need the third of the quorum for them to be installed, but if the Spanish speaking members are enjoying that service already ( as you said) and the community is someone sponsoring it, you have got the right to have the same service in your own language. You just need to communicate that to the President."
"That is under basic principles of equality and non discrimination out of our Constitution text."

Well thats interesting!
I seem to remember everyone getting their knickers in a twist last year about this. Yet at the time the facts which were presented were the same.
I wonder if you have a satellite now Noreen!

Surely the answer is for each block to have a communal dish.
If every owner is allowed to do their own thing, the appearance of the development will be spoiled and the property values will inevitably suffer.

I understand if they are a mess but to be honest i cannot see any problem at all on the site and i should be entitiled to have it as macanthony and key mare have promised the earth and not delivered and for rental etc this is required
everyone to their own as long as it is not a mess and harming anyone
I think the spa closing down should be a major issue for people who want to enjoy thallos at the moment

Sky cannot turn off the signal, these channels can be picked up from the Astra satellite by any sateelite receiver. You need the viewing card to enable C4 & C5, it also regionalises your BBC and ITV output. If you don't have the card, you will still get up to 200 channels.
With regards the dishes, I did post a picture on one of the threads here of how the communal dishes are fitted on Resort, they cannot be seen from ground level without a lot of effort. Generally the first person pays the full installation cost and others then pay a one off €70- €80 euros connection fee. Up to 8 connections can be made, but I have been told that the 4 connection LNB is far superior and less troublesome.
Don't go to the big company in Puerto Rey commercial centre, very expensive. Use one of the smaller independents that will give you value for money and customer service. Take your old box out from the UK or buy one on eBay for a few quid and just have the dish installed.

Hi All We thought that the question of satellite dishes was to be discussed at a community meeting as to how these should be erected , if people do decide to go ahead and purchase their own then if they are positioned on the roof or out of site then that would not be to bad but if they start sprouting out on the fronts of the complex it could become quite an eyesore, we don't want to appear to be old grumpy's but I'm sure that everyone wants to keep Thalassa looking at it's best.
It should be based on the same principle as the awnings that people cannot go putting up every colour as is their whim!

still love it though

Jayne 01242 hit the nail on the head and her feelings are correct in my opinion ,she has articulated how I feel and I support her.

Some of us look down on the roofs of others and the Sat dishes are not a pretty sight. So it is not just a case of keeping them off the front and balconys.
Whilst I very much support the need to have a good range of English Programmes (I currently get BBC World, Sky News and CNN) we should definitely go for one dish per block.

Hi David, sorry when I mentioned putting dishes on the roofs I meant on top of the blocks as you mention, we get the same channels as you but we do have a dvd player so to be honest where as it would be quite nice to receive other channels we are not particularly bothered but understand there are people who are renting out and require it for guests or are permanent residents.

Hi Jayne,
Yes I agree the rentals will want UK satellite.
You say put them on the top of blocks, presumably that means the duplex blocks as well! I am in Block 39 and look down on the duplex blocks opposite on top of which are a whole host of dishes! as i said not a pretty sight.

I understood by Jaynes post that she meant the central atrium. This was explained by Mark and it involves multi use in as Jayne said on top of the roof HIDDEN in the central atrium. This message was last edited by kenshaz on 5/2/2008.

Ken, I understand what Mark said, but if it is the central atrium of all blocks then some of us will still look down on them. I don't mind having one dish per block in view, it's the current perliferation I'm not so keen on!
