The wifi service is provided by
http://www.vip-hotspot.com/
If you log on to their site you will see the costs.
You can then decide to purchase the minimum and try the service out. This is the only way to check for sure that a strong enough signal is reaching your premises. If the signal strength is too low give them a ring - they may have other options

I got online today with the hotspot account.
It works fine now.
Only when its cloudy the connection is poor due to the fact that our antenna gets its signal from the mountain behind DJ.
Best regards,
Rene

Yes it's working inside my apartment (Block 1) in any part of the lounge. However there have been a few problems shown by computer unable to pick up an IP address from the VIP service. In the first case the service was down for a few days because of a fire on Mijas mountain affecting their cables. Yesterday it was because the signal was too low, however they corrected it by evening.

It works inside my appartment block 1 2C however to make the first connexion I have to disconnect the adaptor from the laptop. This shuts down my internal network card. Then I walk with laptop one time to balcony and get connected immediatly.
After this I can use it everywhere in my appartment.
Today there was a problem at hotspot but got the message
Now its working fine again
Best regards,
Rene

hi all
I think the connection differs quite a lot from where you live. We are in bl 4, we could not get connected and pay on the net. We went to the VIP office to get an office acount. Now it works OK, but we often need to get outside to have the signal. But I think the connection is OK when it is only used occasionally. Sometimes it works OK inside too.

Hi Andy,
It depends what you are using it for but for e-mail and a bit of browsing I find a dongle and a pay as you go SIM very economic. You have to buy a dongle initially (about 60€) but a 10€ top up should do for a week (it is based on bytes used not time) - I buy 50€ at a time and it is more than enough for 3 months.

I bought my dongle from the Vodafone shop in Miramar. I expect other networks offer much the same thing. You need your passport and NIE when you buy but it is pretty straighforward. The dongle plugs into a USB port and automatically loads connection software onto your laptop. You can use the same SIM as a Spanish pay as you go phone but I don't bother as it would mean moving the SIM back and forth.

Hi
We bought the same dongle last year. It is working OK, but it needs to be tapped the right way. Sometimes the prepaid time is gone very quickly. We paid 60E prepaid, but it was gone in about 10days.Last year we had internet in 30 days for that amount. Further more, if you are not here for 3 months or more and the number has been out of use, they close the number and you need to buy a new for 15E.
Today we had a visit from the VIP-Hotspot. We bought a USB - antenna for 299E, including 3 months access. The VIP hotspot signal now seems to work everywhere in the house. And next time we arrive, we only need to plug this in and visit the VIP homepage and buy the time we want. A lot easier but maybe a bit more expensive.

That's interesting Grethe, I didn't know that you get cut off if you don't use the Vodafone setup for 3 months. I would consider VIP although I wouldn't be keen on paying 299€ up front. Originally VIP had promised to provide coverage for the whole of Don Juan by instaling relays. The early problems with the signal meant there were few initial takers and the relays were never installed.

We had considering appointing one of the wi-fi providers as official suppliers. This would have the advantage of them providing the basic infrastructure resulting in a lower cost for each instalation. The 2 factors that have held us back from doing this are
1) We need to be sure that whoever we appoint will provide a quality service and this has not been the experience of some neighbours who have had an individual instalation (the service seems to vary between poor and very bad depending on the company)
2) We have had difficulty pursuading everyone to move to the official Satelite TV providers which is required to make economic sense for the provider and are hesitant about appointing a wi-fi supplier as a lot of people do not want it and many of those that do are not going to want to change from their existing supplier
If there is sufficient demand we can reconsider this
