Andy, as far as I can see there are three WIFI suppliers you may connect to at DJ.
I´m in block 1 and is connected to VIP-Hotspot with a home installation. In the upper area of DJ this is currently the only one with an acceptable signal.
You may reach them at 952 593 333.
Y-Internet which I have no information on except poor signal on the upper part of DJ. May be that they are better further down in the area. You may reach them at 952 932 266.
WIFI-Connect this is the new player. They have made 3 installations of roof top antennas and I believe they are now capable to deliver signal probably block 4,5,6 and possible block 7. Their plan is to also be able to serve blocks higher up but at the moment they do not.
You may reach them at 951 063 500

Wifi Connect\Y-Internet have a contract to provide a community wide wifi hotspot. They say there is an issue with 2 antennae on the same roof and wanted the VIP one on block 10 replaced by one of theirs as this is the best place to service the top end of the site from. This has created a bit of a dilemma for me as I don’t want to compel anyone with an existing connection to change. I will be talking to Wifi Connect when we arrive in Spain and hopefully we will find a solution.
Wifi connect are the local reseller for Y-internet. You connect to Y-internet using Paypal which is fine for a holiday maker who only wants to connect for a week or so but the rates are very high and residents or frequent visitors to Don Juan will find it cheaper to set up an account with Wifi Connect.
Andy I will send you contact details for Wifi Connect including a mobile number. If anyone else is interested just send me an e-mail as I do not want to put the details on the internet.

Hi Andy,
Wificonnect 3meg = 80€ +iva => 92.8 ergo 1114 Euro per year
Vip_hotspot 3 meg = 39 Euro including IVA and in case you pay for a year it´s 24 Euro ergo 288 Euro per year.
Wificonnect: For 1 meg I was quoted 38 Euros ergo 456 Euros per year so more money for a 1/3 of the speed.
So it´s clear that for permanent residents Vip-hotspot is much cheaper. They have offers for 5 Euros per month if you demand only a low bandwith as compared to the 15E per month for Wificonnect.
For holidaymakers it´s different because they want a short term connection. Wificonnect can´t offer that as they don´t accept paypal or other online connection methods. You have to resort to Y-connect (the mother company of Wificonnect) which is even more expensive. For a week you have to pay 30 Euro´s for one week (1 mbits)
Vip-hotspot allows paypal or creditcard and it will cost you 20 Euro´s for one week (3 mbits).
So in the end Vip-hotspot is much cheaper for all parties and their signal quality depends on your location just like Wifi-connect.
I tried both services and from my apartment the reception is equal, but the speed of Vip-hotspot is indeed much higher.
@ David
There are multiple people who invested substantially in their Vip-hotspot connection so replacing their antenna would be very costly to a lot of owners. If Wifi-connect can´t reach the higher buildings (nor the lower as I heard) they better use a different roof f.i. that of block 2 which is quite central.

Hi Max,
As you know I’m also in block 2 and I found that the wi-fi connect (Y-internet) signal and 1meg service was much better than VIP hotspot. The connection and speed was always consistent during my 1 week connection. This cost me 30 euro which is 10 euro more than VIP but I feel that it was worth it due to the quality of connection. I was advised by wi-fi connect that you can have this 1 meg connection for a whole year for 150 euro , which if they can guarantee the service is good value for money.
Its good to see that there is competition at Don Juan as I feel that this can only improve the price and quality of broadband connection in the future.
Regards Andy

Hello to all of you in Don Juan 1, My Name is Barry and you can reach me on 655888248 anytime or leave a message in my e-mail which is listed on the community box. I will be happy to explain enything regarding the internet in your community over phone or in person at your apartment.
I have read many things regarding the wifi on hear, the best and most clear way to find out is by asking me or inviting me to show you how it works free of charge.
Regarding low signals strait from your laptop´s this depends on many things and in most cases a simple wifi booster resolves the matter. you can buy these from myself or in any computer store along the cost, form 20€ to 100€ depending on the make you are buying.

Hi Ray,
But do you have a 1 megabit connection? I need 3 megabits and was quoted 92,80 Euro per month!
I am surprised that Andy didn´t pick up a proper signal as his neighbours above him and under him (me) have a very strong signal and a consistent 3 mb speed.
Anyway as long as there is competition it´s fine with me. You choose what you need and what you are willing to spend.

Hi Max, my signal with Y Internet was great when I was in Don Juan and I would use the same company again, no problem. In fact I expect to be visiting DJ more often in 2010 so I just may take them up on the 1 year/150 euro offer deal. Web browsing is good and email downloads and uploads also seem to be very quick, probably faster than what I have in Dubai....
I am not an expert on this but just because you have a faster download speed doesn’t mean that it’s a better "more consistent/reliable" service. I have 8 meg download and 6 meg upload here in Dubai and I must say that sometimes it’s extremely slow, so you cannot just rely on the declared specs of the supplier. It’s very much the same as cameras you can buy a cheap Chinese made 10 meg "Itzy-mitzi" camera with 6 times zoom but a 5 meg Sony or Panasonic with 3 x zoom will be far superior....
So its not about the specs, its more about the quality of service and value for money in my book, this is just my personal opinion and I am sure that everyone else will come to their own conclusions re broadband at DJ..
Regards Andy

Hi Andy,
I´m well aware of the difference between specs and actual results. I used to have a highly specialized computer company so I use internet for over twenty years now. I do my own measurements and can assure you that Vip completely fullfills the 3 meg spec. I need that speed and can´t afford it with WifiConnect so I make different choices. The signal strength from both providers at my apartment is equal so for me it´s just the choice to keep it affordable. As long as both providers are on site I´m happy.
It would btw be good if WifiConnect would publish his prices as people seem to get completely different quotes.

Hello all in Don Juan,
To clear up again this matter about VIP removal. at this time VIP have no legal right to be transmitting from Don Juan as Wificonncet have the Legal contract, however for now no one has ask the full removal for VIP as there are some of you connected and in contract with them. not so many as MAX thinks, plus regarding pricing anyone can obtain these by simply using the e-mail provided months ago or ask me to visit to explain everything face to face.
I connected 4 new apartments last week and every one are very happy with my service and personal support which I gave my promise to -David Munster during our many meetings before appointing Wificonnect.
Regards
Barry James
Director (wificonnect)

I hope that you are going to be more accurate with your info Irene, if you become vice-president. Ray posted that the cost for a year was 150 Euros, and that he was happy with the service.

To clarrify this whole thing. A comment on Barry´s post on his exclusive contract. That´s not the case. You are free to invite other installers. He seems to have a private arrangement with the committee for three roofs, but this not properly registered nor approved by the AGM.
So if you want to offer a cheaper solution for your holiday rental guests or you are only here for less than seven weeks a year feel free to contact VIP or whoever. I have used Y-internet (Barry´s mother company, more expensive but payable per week and by paypal), Iberbanda (about 45E a month on contract, VIP-hotspot (week, month or longer starting at the lowest price) and a Vodafone dongle which can be very expensive if used a lot).
Y-internet can be very fast but is very expensive than. Barry is much slower than Vip and has a data limit., Iberbanda has good and bad days. Vodafone is never very fast and billed by usage. For holiday renters only VIP and Y-internet are viable as they can be arranged on a weekly basis by paypal.
I´m still with VIP, but maybe I will change to another company not mentioned above because they seem very promising. So nothing against Barry´s solution because that can fit your personal situation very well, but I thought I would clarify the whole situation.

Well here we all go again people in Don jaun, Firstly I have a legal contract for hole of fase one, and which was approved in the correct maner. There can be anyone offering wireless internet provinding they do not install Access Point antenners or antenners on any of buildings in don juan fase one.
Regarding pricing you get what you pay for, and the service is very good, plus my personal support is better than anyone ells offering wireless internet as a few of you have already used.
regards Barry J
