I know there is likely to be another thread about this but has anyone had any correspondence from the Council about the council taxes?

Hi All

I just received this e-mail from my solicitor regarding council taxes

Following approval of the aforementioned law, those non-resident individuals who have one or more properties in Spain are no longer required to pay Wealth Tax. However, they are still required to DECLARE the property/ies and pay the Income Tax for Non-Residents.

Therefore, the publication of this law means the following for non-residents with property in Spain that the amount to be paid to the Spanish Tax Authorities (Agencia Tributaria) by means of the new tax return will be less than the amount resulting from the previous tax return given that only the Income Tax for Non-Residents is now applicable and the Wealth Tax has been abolished.

May we also remind you that if you decide to rent out your Spanish property, it is important that you contact us for more information about how this has to be declared.
We would like to take this opportunity to inform you now how much you are liable to pay for our fee and for your income tax for year 2008.
Income tax 2008
90,04 €
Bank commission
0,99 €
Fee 2009
145,00 €

the previous message was about wealth/income tax

Council tax IBI   not realy a council tax, more a land tax on your property. Annual.

you normally get an invoice in the summer months and you'll have to pay by October. Not exactly sure about the dates. For Mazarron it is approx €140 not sure what Alhama will produce

Thanks.

It's just that they seem to describe it as income tax, which is obviously confusing as income tax and council tax as we know them in the UK are obviously very different.

There is so much to learn.

Our Solicitors have asked if we want them to ask as our Fiscal Representatives in order to deal with tax issues. They will charge 70 euro's (for two people) to register us for tax and their fee was 50 euro's for carrying out the work. They  asked if we had heard from the Council about taxes for last year and said they will be due in May 09. However as we are in a very new property it is possible that the taxes have not been issued yet. They reminded us that if we rent the property they can manage the taxes in relation to that and that anyone who is gaining an income from their property has a duty to declare it.

Once again we are going through our emails from last year as I'm sure we completed a form for them regarding this as part of completion.  I particularly remember because of information they sent us regarding paying tax if you rent and the new system in Spain where they can trace income or something like that. Its only two weeks ago we were trawling our email attachments for that document we signed for the DD for community charges !
