I remember some time ago a thread regarding changing the 'shut can't open' front door handle/knob. Could someone tell if it was possible to change and can a match on the inside be got, if so where can it be purchased,

Thanks

 Raff

You don't need new handles just a new spindle 8mm sq x 135mm long, bought mine in UK and took it in hand luggage, a couple of questions at security, but all ok.

Thanks for the info,

Does the new spindle fit the outside handle also and can be turned to open from the outside or does it need need a new handle on the outside?

And does it need special screws to connect the handle to the spindle, as I bring one when over next.

You do not need new handles, the screws in the  handle fit into  the slots that are cut into the new spindle and you can open the door from the outside.

Just so I am completely clear about this as it takes a bit to sink in with me???

Do you just need a new spindle 8mm x 135mm or do you still have to mod the 8mm x 135mm spindle by making cuts at each end

Thanks

 Not Smooth

You do need a new spindle and with a hack saw cut through the spindle as DandC explaned, then the grub screw in the handle goes into the slot, its very easy, there is no springs or bits that fly off !!

Phew found it now on page 24!!

I will assume you now mirror both ends of the spindle as per the internal bit of the original spindle ie the unlocking end.

Hi Paul

Yes you copy the inside spindle, the existing spindle has a free moving piece on the outside that is why you cannot open the door from the outside.Whith the new spindle being one piece you can then open the door, the grub screw in the handle`s locate in the hack saw cut`s in the spindle.Hope this is now clear to you.

Hi,

I changed my spindle following these instructions and it worked a treat, but I had to buy a file from the hardware store on Camposol to get the spindle to fit. It maybe a good idea to get the next size down 7mm or 6mm. Its a 10 min job if the spindle fits.

Hope this helps

Pad

Thanks everybody for the update, but I am finding it hard to find a long enough spindle. The thread mentions 135mm, the bigest I have seen local (including B&Q) is 90mm or 100mm. Does it need to be 135mm and if it can be smaller would the 90mm fit.

Martin.

The spindle has to be 135 mm same as the old one.

I you go to the larger B-Q store`s they have all sort`s of bar`s ,they are about 1 mtr long and cost £3 or £4.

The 8mm is a tight fit and as already been said you can just file the  end that fits into the door lock square ,I also bought a file from Campasol. The 6mm bar might not work it`s to small.

Martin,

B&Q sell all sorts of bars about a meter long this is the " spindle" you need to look for.

Thanks All,

I will check B&Q again tomorrow, as it is a superstore over 2 floors and should have it. I was looking for a spindle specifically for a door and not bars in general.

I went to a local locksmith and got a piece of square bar (sold as a replacement spindle) slightlu longer than 135mm for £1.75.

Sorry to be a pain but I would like to cut the bar before gonig to CDA.

The horizontal cut is 20mm long but how deep is it vertically 3mm, 6mm???

Paul,

I would wait untill you get on site and can mark the correct positions of the grub screws.

Just pop into Camposol and buy a small hacksaw and then make the cuts untill the screws bite.

Ah

So you dont cut a piece out of the ends of the spindle to make like a step at each end, you just make a a hacksaw cut 20mm long.
