Hi Irene and Peter
We would like to have Sky aswell or at least the equivalent in English speaking channels ( including the sport - an absolute must ) - Perhaps television is not as important to others but for us we would be disappointed to not be able view what we wanted when we wanted in the comfort of our own home ( especially as in these days of modern technology it is all achievable eventually ) - and as we are more than willing to subscribe to other requests that may become relevant in the community - ( acquiring telephone lines and internet access etc ) - we wish to make it known that satellite TV for us in Don Juan Phase 1 Block 1 is high on our lists of requirements and we would really like to have it
We think also it is something that should be aired now and agree with this separate thread as ideally it would be great to sort alot of these things out now whilst there is still alot of activity and upheaval so as the all year round residents can have some peace

Further to my post of a few minutes ago and having read the other thread on Sky TV - I just want to make clear that we are only interested in being able to get some of the channels - If that means ' freeview ' or whatever then that would be fine - Not really technically minded about these sort of things but if Sky dishes are huge, ugly, and gives illegal viewing then that is obviously not the way to go
All we personally need is the access that people already living in Spain actually have at the moment - however that is supplied - perhaps someone can enlighten us...............
Hope this makes sense to anybody - sorry if I am waffling

Hi Mozza,
It's not illegal by Spanish law, but your agreement with Sky formally forbids it. This doesn't stop over a hundred thousand English viewers in Spain to do it.
Just admit you can't live without Coronation street and Chris insists on his Sunday sports :)

Hi Max
We have been rumbled - it is sad I know....................we need something to relax with after the walk up the hill
It has been good to read that there are alternatives to enable multi channel viewing and if we can easily use the cards from here somehow without having huge dishes then that will be fine by us -

Hi Max
We have just arrived back home as you know. We stayed in the Rhonda 111 apartment block on the seafront in Los Boliches, just past Fools & horses bar/Palm Beach apartments in the direction to Fuengirola. We paid for the tv whilst there. Not sure if it was a cable company or a satelite company, but they had a very good selection of channels from all countries on it. I will list the ones I remember.
ENGLISH STATIONS: BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV 1, ITV 2, BBC 4, CHANNEL 4, CHANNEL 5, SKY NEWS, SKY SPORTS 1, SKY SPORTS 2, SKY SPORTS 3, SKY SPORTS NEWS, SETANTA SPORTS 1, SETANTA SPORTS 2, CBBC KIDS CHANNEL, DISCOVERY, LOTS OF OTHERS THAT I CAN NOT REMEMBER.
IRISH STATIONS: RTE 1, NETWORK 2, SETANTA SPORTS 1, SETANTA SPORTS 2
FRENCH STATIONS: CANAL+, OTHERS ???
SPANISH STATIONS: ????
GERMAN STATIONS: ????
It might be worth going in and asking the girl in reception what the setup is, to see if it can be done as an annual package, or a weekly rental. I certainly thought it was a very good selection. I would be very interested to know what feedback you get.

Having spend 12 days in Spain - 10 of them in DJ1 - without TV - we would be interested in having Sky of the equivalent.

Hi Rig
Satelite TV is high on a lot of people's list of priorities. However the attempted take over of the community has meant that this and other issues have been put on the back burner.
There is a place on the roof that can accomadate sat dishes and cables leading to each apartment. What needs to be decided is whether the cost of the dish is borne by the community or is shared only by those people who use it (which seems fairer as there is a full Spanish digital terrestrial service available from the existing aerial if you have a freeview box or a tv with freeview built in so the Spanish have no need of a dish).
It appears that Sky is transmitted from a satelite that is far away from the one used by most European satelite broadcasters and we will need a separate dish - to have both Sky and, for example German TV you would need to be connected to 2 dishes but to have German and Danish TV you only need to be connected to 1.
We will each have to pay for our own digibox or bring our own from the UK. If we buy a box in Spain but bring our existing card from the UK when we go over (this is what I was planning to do) the family package channels will work but Sports and Movies will not because Sky encrypts them so that they can only be viewed using the card in the digibox registered with them.

Hi all,
The question is not if you want sky (or other satellite receivers for non-Brits), but how to get it. We (the presidency and the administrator) have already asked for quotations from respectable companies. The thing is that we have to present to you, the community a firm offer and the community meeting has to decide on it.
At the moment we first have to cope with the extra-ordinary meeting. If the developer takes over the community budget there will be no dishes at all. He will just spend the your and mine money on its own ‘expenses’.

Hi max yes there is more things to worry about but if only 1 person in each block wants sky there will be no need for it so we need to see if anyone else wants sky irene/peter.

We are have noticed a number of Satellite dishes going up this week I think these are mostly the Spanish. Also we brought a uk TV and there is picture but no sound apparently we have to get a tuner maybe in a DVD recorder.

Hi Janmet,
The dishes you see going up are all done by Brits to receive Sky. One building completely lost the Spanish television system because the Sky installer just cut the communal cables and put up a private dish for his client. He also misused the communal roof, layed concrete on it and drilled holes through the communal walls. To finish it off he uses the communal electricity for his client.
There are already three buildings with this problem. The value of our properties is going down at a very fast rate because they are also installing aircon in an illegal way and ruining the overall look of the buildings. Potential buyer will be scared off by the look of the buildings. In the Netherlands you wouldn't buy into such a community and the Spanish think likewise. It's a pity.
Luckily it is all illegal as we decided on the first meeting that this was not allowed so the people who did this will have to remove it, repair the building and will be held responsible for all the damage (like leakages). I hope that EyeonSpain readers will not do these things as it's actually quite rude to your neighbours.

How many dishes have you noticed Janmet, and do you think they are being put up by individuals for private use rather than shared ? According to Davmunster's post of 28th Oct. there is already a Spanish TV service in place so I am confused as to what satellite service these dishes are for...
This is some information from Sky's The Limit website ( http://www.skysthelimit.tv/faq.php) who cover all of the Costa del Sol and concentrate solely on Sky TV installations:
What are the minimum dish requirements for southern Spain?
The minimum size for reception in southern Spain is 1.3 to 1.5 metres with a low noise block (lnb) figure of about 0.3 db. Invacom lnbs are the best for fringe areas such as Spain.
The size of dish required depends on where you are, please tell us your exact location and we can calculate the optimum dish size for crystal clear reception. The quality of reception also depends on how well the dish is fitted, we will not fit a dish that is not secure and permanent.
How many boxes can be run off a single satellite dish?
The answer is infinite! Lnbs come with various outputs, i.e. they range from one port, from which you can run one box, then two outputs for two digiboxes, and four outputs for four digiboxes. The maximum being eight outputs, enabling you to run eight digiboxes from the one satellite dish.
If however you are in a community and want 64 apartments installed with a separate digibox in each apartment, so each resident can have a digibox and a subscription of their own it is still possible with one dish. This situation requires switching and amplifying equipment at the headend (telecoms closet) consisting of multi-switches which come in outputs of four and multiples thereof.
As I'm sure not everyone wants Sky TV, I think a second fixed dish pointed at the appropriate satellite could cater for most other needs and I would be happy to contribute to an "all in one" solution if agreement is forthcoming. Obviously a proliferation of dishes all over the place is not desirable and it is good that there is, at least, a designated place on the top of each block for this very purpose.
Just reading Max's comments now I would have to agree that interfering with the communal elements as described without permission is not on at all.
