So why use Ryanair?  £4 per passenger per single flight for credit and debit cards is a definite rip-off.  Plus the price for a suitcase is extortionate and they charge you £4 to book in with a case.  It's getting to cost more for the luggage than the passengers.
The flight timings (depends where you're going, of course) are also rubbish and you often have to get to the airport at silly o'clock in the morning!!!!  Now they are even going to allow mobile phones to be used on board - if you pay £2 a minute, of course.  And the boss just says tough.  You get cheap flights and know they're going to try and sell you loads of stuff and hike up any charge they can think of but that's the way they operate.  I had made up my mind never to even consider flying with them again.
HOWEVER.   East Midlands to Alicante is served by BMIBaby, EasyJet, Thomsonfly and Ryanair.  Checked them all for a booking in November.
BMIBaby is £236 for two plus the credit card fee.  EasyJet is £214 without priority boarding or credit card charges.  Thomsonfly was a staggering £327.
Ryanair?  Flights free.  Charges and taxes £36 and £4 credit card fee.  Bought two flight bags from Tesco at £10 each which fits the sizes allowed on board by Ryanair so no luggage or booking in fee.  Didn't take priority boarding as my elbows are as sharp as anyone elses on the mad dash out to the plane.
Therefore, £88 return for 2 plus the bags which we can use again.  That's the reason for flying with Ryanair.  Sorry, but at that price I succumbed so now have early morning (0600 from Alicante on a Sunday) and 0755 the previous Friday.  So 10 days for eighty odd quid.  Oh, and  won't be using my mobile phone on board, either. Still smarting at the £16 for the credit or debit card charge, though.

Hi Bobaol,do you get charged only £4 per person credit card charge with Ryanair,i got charged £8 per person,i have just booked flights again but used my sisters Electron card so have saved £32 we are taking two children with us so didnt pay for cases for them so that saved a bit but didnt realise we didnt need to pay the booking in fee as you stated,so that could of saved more money.I agree with the flight times they are rubbish but we cant get flights cheaper with anyone else so have to grin and bare it.

Carol, that's £4 per flight, ie £8 return.  That's £36 taxes and charges plus £4 each way so £44 each - £88 in total.  By far the best deal but the £16 still smarts considering they pay the banks 50p for a debit card booking regardless of cost.

I've just booked for 2 return Murcia to Luton with Ryanair 22 Oct till 2 Nov, 125€ for BOTH of us and includes 2 bags, check in and card fees ( don't have Electron ) and then for 1, 28 Nov till 6 Dec from Murcia to East Mids inc taxes, bags and card charge for 73€ return.
I don't think I can beat that with any other airline and cannot bear the idea of wasting money on more expensive flights just so I may not have to queue or arrive at 8.30pm.
Electron is a debit card so the money comes out of an account straight away so perhaps that's why there is no charge?
I don't like having to pay sooooooo much for using a card, but I STILL can't get cheaper flights that with Ryanair.

Hi I agree i cannot bear the thought of paying for more expensive flights either it is worth the rubbish times, its just the c/c fees that get to me but i dont mind now i have Electron card.they charge you for your Debit card[£8 ea] and that comes straight out of bank. They will probably get wise to Electron and start charging for that,

It does say on the website that Electron is free for a limited time. It doesn't say just how limited that time is though.

Hi

Ive just booked four flights and the return flight was £49.99 ea but when i put in 4 passengers it went up to £69.99 ea,so i put in 3 and got them for £49.99 then paid £69.99 for 1,which was a saving of £60. I used my sisters Abbey Electron so that saved another £32 so  all in all i,m happy with that saving.

Smile also do electron cards, they're part of the Co-op Bank and I believe can only be opened online.

Hi Sarah

With the two screens, I did it because my Wife was taking hold luggage, my Son and I weren't so didn't want to pay for check in when we could do it online. Sometimes when you make a booking you can find you get one finished and by which time, the price has gone up. By making two bookings at the same time, you can check and see what the prices are at the time and if they are going up. Does that make sense?

I think you will find they don't allow unaccompanied children under the age of 14, so could be difficult to book separately.

Mark

Edited to add:

What is Ryanair's policy on the carriage of unaccompanied minors?

Ryanair does not carry unaccompanied minors (under 14 years). Escort and special facilities are NOT available. Ryanair will carry unaccompanied minors aged 14 or 15 years ONLY upon completion and signature of a form of indemnity at check-in of EACH departure airport, by a parent or guardian.

Children under the age of 14 years must always be accompanied on the same reservation by a passenger over 16 years.

Unaccompanied minors aged 14 -17 years travelling must present the required valid photo-id at check-in. The parent or guardian of the unaccompanied minors, are required to remain in the airport until the flight has departed.

I've just opened a Cashminder Current account with Cooperative Bank and the highly prized Visa Electron card comes with it. This currently doubles as a get out of jail card when purchasing Ryanair flights etc, ie no card charge at all !!! Hope I get a chance to take advantage before El Sr. O'Leary pulls the plug on the flights I habitually use. saludos RR

The other annoying thing with Ryanair is that, unlike other airlines, bookings by credit card are immediately charged to your card.  Other companies, EasyJet, BMIbaby and Thomsonfly, only charge your credit card on the day of your outbound flight.  Just another little point but still haven't managed to beat their prices with anyone else. Even Monarch from Birmingham to Alicante work out at double the cost.
