candyloss :
freeview is NOT available in spain - it is a UK only system that gets its channels via UK TV transmitters.
freesat is available in spain.
there are two versions : freesat and freesatfromsky.
they both uses the same satellites and same signals and therefore the same big dishes are needed.
freesat offers about 100 free channels - inc bbc, itv, c4 - and soon Five
freesat HD offers BBCHD and ITV HD
freesat HD PVRs (internal hard disk recordings) will be out laters this year)
freesatfromsky offers over 200plus channels - including bbc, itv, c4, c4+1, five, five us, fiver (the latter two they say will never be on freesat), sky3,
freesatfromsky does not have any HD channels - you need a sky hd reciever to get them
freesatfrom sky has no hard disk recording facility - this is only on a sky+ maching and subscription.
the freesat receivers are good, but personally i would wait unti the freesat HD PVRs are available.

Hi satandpcguy
I know youre a mile away from me but seeing as you are offering advice on these systems can you tell me if you can get both from the same dish and box or would you need t separate boxes? I heard that there is a box that can receive both?
Waht would i expect to pay for a complete installed system to get say the FreesatfromSKY
Thanks in advance

freesat, freesatfrom sky, sky all broadcasyt from the same group of satelites (located at 28.2 - 28.5 degrees east from south), therefore you can get them using one dish, pointing in the same direction.
a sky receiver gets all (apart from itvhd) the channels that are also on freesat receiver.
a freesat receiver gets far fewer channels that are on sky receiver.
a sky receiver uses the sky tv guide
a freesat receiver uses the freesat tv guide
you can also but generic freetoair receivers that wil also get the free channels, but these generic receiver do not have the programme guides like the sky and freesat boxes...the generic receivers are limited to only now and next information, freesat and sky have a full 7 days programme information.

Thank you for the reply!
So I could get a box to do both freefromsky and Freesat AND other free channels but I would have to make do with a now and next EPG?
Sounds a reasonable trade off.
So what about the price?
Again I appreciate the advice....you lot out there notice this guy is advising as a non paid service...that normally reflects on a decent supplier!
Cheers

Receivers are labelled as "Free to air" or "canale libres". these have no function for reading sky, or canal+ subscription cards. you can get them from most stores that do electricals - prices from 40ish for the cheap and nasties, to 150 for the dogsbolox....i would personnal aim to spend 70-100 on a known name...illusion, strong, manhatten to name a few....you can get them with inbuilt hard drives also...
apart from not having the 7 day epg, you will have to manually search and tune the channels in - takes about 10 minutes or so looking at astra 2 and eurobird 1. however, channels very often change their broadcast parameters (video and audio settings) so you may have to perform this operation on a regular basis.
and of course the channels you get on all three boxes depends on the size of you dish.....
Again I appreciate the advice....you lot out there notice this guy is advising as a non paid service...that normally reflects on a decent supplier!
many thanks. after sales service without the sales!!!!!!

Seriously now...back to topic...Ive only been here 2 minutes and she's leading me astray!
UPDATE...look close at the kittens eyes...concentration ready to pounce!!! This message was last edited by headghogg on 8/13/2008.

the "dish" you have is actually a mesh receiver aerial used by TM.
this is totally incompatiable with satellite signals, and so you will need to clear some space and find a good place for a minimum of a 1.8m dish - it needs to have a clear unobstructive view of the satellites,...which is approximately where the sun is at about 12oclock noon.

Ok
So in a nutshell, the mesh receiver is no good ? The freeview boxes over here would be no good? So to just receive a few britih channels, what in simple terms would be the answer?
Just a thought, what if we took a sky satellite dish over with us? Would that work with a british box?

its been a very big nutshell...
a TM mesh cannot recive satellite signal
a freesat box will work in spain, but i would wait for hte freesat hd with built in hard disk
freeview boxes can (with some limitations) be used in spain to receive tdt spanish digital tele via a normal tv aerial
a sky dish is just too small to use effectivly here in spain...you need a minimum of an 80cm dish to get good recepition of most things...
cheapest and simple option - buy a 80cm dish and receiver kit from lidl or a diy shop and get what you can - but to get bbc and itv you will need a big dish - say 1,.8m
going for some food now.......:-)

Thanks Sat
I will be quiet now and start packing, will have more room in the suitcase now I don't need to pack the sky dish . Room for more shooooes.
Just one more question. With the TM mesh dish we were receiving bbc, itv etc. So if we were receiving these channels via the dish, would we not be able to receive them again without the need for a bigger dish?

Question

Answer
Eh?
those channels you were receiving via your TM mesh dish are being transmitted from a local transmitter - which are getting their signal from another transmitter, who are getting their signal from another transmitter, who are hooked up to their own satellite recivers which are hooked up to a big dish which gets the signals fom the satellite.
you cannot use your tm mesh dish to get satellite channels direct from the satellite. you may be able to use your mesh dish to receive other rebroadcasters signals....
if you want bbc and itv for free via satellite you will need a big satellite dish
