I am coming over in the February half term (Leeds, doesn' appear to be anyone else's ) and have been told I need to go to Vera town hall to register our living there and also so we can pay the local taxes. Does anyone know the procedure please and what we need to take with us? Dave told us it was about 3€ to register. Is that per person or per property?

Thanks

Mark

Just so that you don't feel ignored, I will answer you!!

I can't help though as we haven't been to the town hall yet. It may get done in Feb but if not definitely when we are over in April.

Thanks Noreen. I just really wanted to know if there were certain days, times, what fees to expect, etc. I can't think of anything worse than going back day after day in the hope of finding out what to do.

Mark is non resident also & this doesn't have a bearing on registering at the town hall.

As I understand it, one of the reasons for registering is so that the local authority/local government can claim additional funds fron central government, in order to support the infrastructure of their expanding population. (even if that population is not permanently resident)

I am sure there is more to it than that but that was an explanation that we were given.

Do you mean the certificate of non-residence?  Our bank applied for that for us and charged us about 17 euros.  It is valid for two years and according to our bank is renewed automatically if you have an nie number.  They should know what they are talking about, but I must admit that I am a bit uneasy about it and will have to check for sure on our next visit.

On completion our solicitor told us that there where two taxes to pay as non residants, buth of which are not due until after a year of ownership, she did name them but cant remember exactly what she called them. She also said that they where very nominal amounts, one about 50 euros and the other not a lot more, maybe someone with more experience can confirm this. There was no indication that you had to register with the town hall until after the first year

Stu

It was also INTIMATED that no-one bothers

I am after officially telling the Spanish I live there. I want to pay (I don't really, but it has to be done I suppose) their equivalent of council tax. And yes, as Noreen mentioned, there is something about registering so that the authorities know when to build a new school, hospital, or similar. In the UK it is simple, you telephone the council and they send a form. I was lead to believe it had to be done at the Town Hall and that there was a fee for doing so.

Mark,

My understanding from reading your mail, is that you have not yet completed.  Before completion your solicitor should obtain an NIE number on your behalf at a cost of about 100 euros each.  This is a necessary when purchasing a property in Spain.  The completion process will require the solicitor to register the property in your name, this in turn will trigger the necessary taxes/ local authority taxes etc.

Our solicitor did not mention anything about registering at the Town Hall.  In fact we signed the council tax forms etc on completion and we are paying our solicitor an annual fee to ensure that these are paid on our behalf.

I would suggest that you speak to your solicitor  in order to clarify this.

Mark has completed & he will have already had his NIE number for some time prior to that taking place.

We also have completed & our solicitor never mentioned to us about registering at the town hall but for the reasons mentioned in previous posts on this thread, it is something that should be done.

Perhaps what you are confusing the registration at the Town Hall with is your empadrianmento which enables you to purchase a car.

This service is free, just take your passport and a copy of your apartment/home address in Spain (registration document which is in your KeyMare "welcome" pack) and that's about it!

This also enables you to get a "gas" contract for the purchase/supply of (the larger) gas bottles for your barbeque/patio heater.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Lorrainen Braid.

I am still investigating this one!!

IBI Bills, Basura, Wealth Tax, SUMA are terms that have been mentioned so far!!!

There is an article on EOS - Articles from Newsletter - Relocating to Spain - Padron Municipal

That pretty much covers what has been said on this thread re the local authority being able to claim central funds etc.
