Polaris get you NIE number for you as long as they have a photocopy of your passport. They charge around £12 but they just add this to your first services bill in due course.  UPS are a bit of a nightmare.  I ended up calling their number (08457-877877) and ignoring the prompts to get through to someone to take my details.  If you hang on the line long enough without selecting an option you will get someone.  Good luck!!!

 

We organised the NIE ages ago because we were advised to do it as soon as we could- you might need it for Bank Accounts etc, we have sent photocopies of passports, finally arranged UPS via their website as they shut at 2pm on Saturday (which was when we'd got the bits ready to send, then tried to arrange pick up). They misread our address so didnt turn up at the arranged time and so we  had to rearrange

Thanks for the quick replies, I better get this in order then as I will need to sort a bank account out, I have a page in Spanish and all I can make out is Banco Popular! I guess this is the builders mortgage?

The property is both my name & my wifes but I may need to change this as with 2 young kids it will difficult to go out there at a drop of a hat, I will speak to my solicitor and see if I can do this and put it  in both our names when we complete.

I have applied for the developers subrogated mortgage (haggle with them on the Euribor +1.1 though and you should do better - even without their products).  I didn't need an NIE number to open my account with CAM bank for this.  The lady at the bank in Torre Pacheco branch is very helpful and speaks good English.

Fortunately I don't need a mortgage but I must open a bank account, can I open one from the UK or do I need to visit them in person.?

Also do they charge you to transfer money in?

We've already managed to get our NIE numbers on a previous visit to spain with the help of our agent & solicitor. We found UPS fairly straight forward after it taking them 3 attempts to deliver the paperwork due to us being at work, we gave them the works address but they kept trying to deliver at the home address. For collection we just filled the details in on the website and they picked up no problems.

As for banks we're looking at setting up a Halifax account in England & Halifax in Spain where you can manage both accounts online and transfer money between them free of charge via telephone banking (can't transfer on the net at the moment). There is a Halifax branch in Mazarron. You can also set up the spanish account from the UK.

Please can someone give me some advise on applying for the NIE. PW have sent in the post to me four application forms to apply for the NIE. I thought you only need the one number no matter how many properties you have bought. I have e-mailed PW for an answer but thought it would be quickly, and more accurate (!) if you could advise.

You do - and should - only need to have one number.  It would be like having 2 nationa insurance numbers were you to obtain more than 1.  Not sure why PW sent you 4!!!! Maybe they were hoping you'd get 3 of your friends to buy from them?????

For information,

I contacted Polaris World yesterday (06/03/08) regarding completion of N.I.E. paperwork. The only address you need to record on the NIE form is 'plot no?? eg J0879, Jardines de Alhama', in Section 1 'Domicilio en Espana C./Pl' box. Do not use other boxes, eg 'No', 'Piso' etc for address. Do not need to any record address in Section 4. I guess they'll probably complete that.

Also, as I understand it, the Spanish don't use middle names but multiple surnames, would suggest therefore that you only record surname in '1er Apellido' box Section 1, & not any middle names. Might confuse things!!

Additionally, make sure you sign under Sections 3.

Once completed return with copy of passport, client sheet & 'Mandato Simple Para Solicitud Administrativa' form.

Hi all, In regard to picking up your NIE number , what we were told is that when you are contacted to come over to sign any completion papers for the hand over of your property , you will also be instructed to pick up your NIE numbers in murcia the day before, this way the whole thing is completed in one trip.

As for completing a snagging list you will be notified that your property is available to be inspected and the snagging list has to be forwarded to polaris world within 10 days and I believe it must be completed in Spanish, I am open to correction on this.
