Due to time pressures I am planning on trying to get an NIE number sorted out here in the UK. I know this is possible at the London consulate. Does anyone else have experience of this in terms of ease, time taken etc? Do you need to take any other documentation than you would need in Spain? Any information would be very welcome. Thanks.

If you have a Spanish lawyer acting on your behalf they should be able to do this for you. Ours simply e-mailed us som forms which we completed and returned and he sent us the NIE numbers a few weeks later. This seems the simplest option. Anyway, something for you to consider...

Yes solicitors need power of attorney to collect and apply for them on your behalf, I inquired about doing this and by the time you get all the paperwork signed by a notary in the UK and pay the Foreign office fees it works out quite pricey.!
I have now decided to let Polaris sort my numbers out as I don't need them before I complete and thought I might as well try and save a few quid here and there!

Hi Dan
I may be misunderstanding you when you say about costs, but when I went to the Spanish Consulate in Manchester I paid no fees to obtain my NIE Numbers, I just submitted all the required documents and then, some weeks later received our NIE Numbers in the post to my home address in the UK

Your right Phil, I was talking about the solicitor doing the whole lot on your behalf, for this you need to give him power of attorney which requires notary signatures and verification on passports, NIE forms and POA document.
Hence the cost!

Hi Dan
Fog Lifted now I understand.
We also arranged power of attorney for our Spanish solicitor at the consulate in Manchester but this is much more complicated to do, we had our solicitor send us a sample document of that required and the Consulate prepared the papers in line with that request and than when they where ready we went back to sign them with the Notary in Manchester. And yes you do pay for this service. We had this done in case we are not able to get back to complete on the property when required.
Regards
Phil

I didn't need to give power of attorney to my solicitor in Spain to get the NIE Numbers for us. He e-mailed us some forms which we completed and returned via the mail.
