Hi
Does anyone know if there are plans to create a continuous foot-path or cycle-path from Roda to Los Alcazares? It's a very pleasant distance to walk, but very dangerous when you get to the over-pass.
We walked back from the town to Roda last week-end but had to use a very dark tunnel to avoid walking over the overpass, which we were warned was very dangerous. Roda Customer Services told us that they have no plans as this is an issue for the Town Council. Does anyone know if there are plans in place?
And if not, can the Roda Community Associations lobby the Town Council ?

We also enjoy the walk to/from Alcazares, but agree with Viv, it is a bit dangerous. We wondered if the tunnels you can see went right under the road and have not been down to see, maybe these could be improved with a path and some lighting as a cheaper option for the council (presumably they are just a dark, dirt track). You would have thought the council would have made it a condition of planning, to at least create a safe foot path. It would not be quite so bad going over the overpass, if the plants/weeds are all cut down, I wonder who's responsibility that is?

The tunnels you refer to are part of the drainage system for the area and are not meant to be an access route but we too use these to cycle through regularly rather than the bridge. Regrettably Neither Roda nor Town Council saw fit to improve the infrastructure so that pedestrian access can be gained. After all the bridge is over the motorway so was put in for vehicle access to Roda Village and beyond NOT to serve the resort.
Very unlikely you will get anywhere other than pressing Roda to provide a footbrige over the motorway, just think how expensive that would be!
I think the communities have enough to concern themselves with, improving and maintaining facilities so would not see them as an option.
Yes very shortsighted of both Roda and Town Council not to insist on better access in order to cut down car use, but hey this is Spain.
Plus I think Roda would prefer guests to use onsite facilities if they ever get built.

Please excuse an interloper, but as an owner on your neighbouring development of Senorio de Roda, can I just say that there would be a considerable amount of support for the safer route to LA. As Hugh_man says, the tunnel is a drainage channel and one would presume that any attempt to suggest that it was a footpath would open the council up to some serious health and safety issues (maybe!!). But there must be some safe way of walking (especially at night) between the restuarants and our developments.
My neighbours tell me that the lady mayoress of Roda is fairly pro-active regarding amenities for residents and ex-pats, I will be going out soon, so will try to find out from them, what, if anything can be done to find a solution. Unfortunately, as with this country, I suspect that only catastrophe will have any effect on this situation.

Cooberpedy, welcome to the forum, your inpit is valued. It amazes me that with two fairly large developments in the area that suitable foot access was not provided when they built the bridge, however this may have been before the developments started.
I am not up with the whos and whys of local planning but I would assume local authorities would rely on developers to provide much of the infrastructure rather than local tax payers.
As I said, the cost of building a foot/cycle bridge would be enormous but would certainly reduce traffic movements I am sure as well as contributing to safety factors.
I am convinced there would be enormous support from owners at Roda Golf and we would appreciate any feedback from your side
Look forward to seeing further input.
Chris

I understand from earlier discussions about the location of Roda and Los Alcazares when we first bought here that the boundary for Los Alcazares Ayuntamiento or Council stops at the overpass and that the boundary for San Javier Ayuntamiento starts at the same spot.
I have never quite managed to work out if it means everything to the right of the over pass or road is Los Alcazares responsibility and everything to the left is San Javier´s (going towards Los Alcazares). I doubt that it means that there is a line in the middle of the road which demarcates each council but you never know. If this is the case both councils would need to be involved in remedying the situation or coming up with a safe method for pedestrians to cross the overpass and perhaps this is the problem because neither wishes to take responsibility.

Thanks for the welcome Chris ( I have been a sneaky watcher of your forum for a good while now - always good to know what our neighbours are doing, thinking and feeling).
Our understanding is that the bridge/ motorway is the boundary; our side (Roda) is San Javier municpality and the ayuntamiento there controls most things to do with us.
However, back to my original remarks: when the new lady mayoress of Roda was inaugurated last year - it was rumoured that she and the new lady mayoress of san javier thought along similar lines ( no sexist comments please!). As I said, I will ask people who are resident on our development, when I get out there, if there is a way to the lady mayoresses? earssss.

Hi , we have just come back from roda, after a lovely week in the sun. We heard that one of the residents of roda who works in the town, was atacked while cycling home from work under the bridge. He was beaten up and his wallet stolen by three men . So please beware if going via the underpass. Im sorry if this sounds a bit doom and gloom, but better forewarend

I'm taking 3 friends out to Roda in a couple of weeks and it was my intention to test out the walk into town, to find out what was the least worst option, but am having second thoughts.
I can't see anyone raising enough money to provide a footbridge, but making the drainage tunnel/underpass safer, may be a cheaper option. It would benefit everyone if some sort of access between Roda and all the facilities and beaches could be provided - the shops and restaurants would probably benefit from extra trade (although I agree with hugh-man that Roda would probably rather everyone stayed on site). Roda's major appeal is its location, but it is a pity this cannot be made more of - so near yet so far! If asked, most people would say they liked to be able to walk to bars, restaurants, etc. and of course this would provide added appeal when trying to market our properties - as well as being a real bonus for owners on both sites.

Regarding walking into to town, please take extreme caution on the way back as the the barman who works in the Celtic Irish Pub was mugged, assaulted and beaten up by 3 Moroccans as cycled through the underpass on the way home to Roda village.

This bad news about the mugging.
Are Roda aware of this ? My son and his friends are going out to Roda at the end of May and they intended to walk to the bar's ect; But I am now worried that this is something that might happen again. Have the police been involved? Is the forum aware that access to Roda can be had, via the access road to the rear of the complex., as there is just a portocabin and no barriers at this opening. Can anyone give numbers for taxis that are given access to Roda as better safe than sorry.

We need to keep a sense of perspective this unfortunate incident should not be allowed to make some folk fearful. we have cycled through the tunnels for most of last year and plan to continue likewise, however we would not dream of cycling through the tunnel after dark. You occasionally see unsavoury ( looking ) characters hanging about in cars on the Los Narjos side of the motorway.
Faced with a similar choice of paths in most Europian city and every city or town in Britain you would not dream of taking the dark underpass through such a waste area at night.
Cycling in daylight around the area also needs care and thought, some of locals ? think that Bikes have no right of way on roundabouts.

We have often walked into town from Roda during daylight and early evening, my husband it 6'6" so not too many are going to try anything with him!!! However, we have found a good reliable cabbie, his no. is 0034685107761. He charges about 8 euros each way which is a small price especially if there are more than two of you.

Hi,
Does anyone have any other taxi firms they can recommend please? I have used one already, who was very reliable, but quite busy, so I would like a couple of alternatives for some non-drivers staying at our apartment in July.
Any help appreciated.

I have just returned after spending 5 days at Roda. On one of these days I left my wife on the beach and I walked back to Roda. It was 5 o clock in the afternoon. When I reached the flyover a dark coloured male wearing a hoodie beckoned me to come into the illegal dump that is in the field beside the flyover. I just waved him away . He then became more vocal and persisted on calling me to join him. I walked to the top of the bridge and phoned my wife . After a few minutes a police car passed by and this person who had by now been joined by another on a motorcycle moved off. I found the whole episode scary. Im posting this to reminds people to be very careful walking back to Roda , especially at night.
