As several people have said- this is by no means unusual. We have met many instances of such helpful and kindly behaviour here in Spain. We live in a little village in northern Huelva - lovely green hillsides.
A note on watching Spanish TV to improve your language skills- open teletext page 888 ( available on most channels for deaf people) and you'll get Spanish sub-titles along with the picture, which we find help a lot in following dialogues.
Welcome and have fun!

Hi - Will definitely look at page 888 - every little helps, thank for the valuable tip. My comprehension is much better than aural - probably like most of us struggling Brits, BUT I will not give up learning, just think it is so worth it to try.....

Hi all,
We are in Catalunya so have catala and spanish to deal with.
Having a child in school, you get a list each year of items needed for school.
This year (in catala) there was some thing called 'flabiol de gralla'. Now most items (having been here 2 years) I understand, however, having used my trusty english/catala dictionary, it came up with 'flageolet of jackdaw'! (a jackdaw with flageolet beans?) Great. So what do you serve that with? Rice? and how do you get it to school and back?
Turns out it's a recorder (a musical instrement) for his music lessons!
I have found that if you laugh at your-self, you'll find them laughing With you and not At you.
It's all good fun. I'd still rather live in Spain than UK. Don't get me wrong, I love the UK, I just prefer to live in Spain.
Take care.
Febe

Febe, I am sure the Spanish have just as many weird experiences as we do, regarding translations.
I am so glad i am in Murcia,
¡solo castellano!
A friend is 5 minutes away and has Valenciano and Castellano to deal with.
However i will say, helping children with homework initially, has helped MY Spanish no end....
Like you love Uk but absolutely LOVE SPAIN and living here, it is a life experience even if it doesn't last forever so glad we have done it as a family.

I've found nothing but friendliness and help since moving to Spain.

When we moved to Almeria 4 years ago, my 2 kids fully integrated within a matter of weeks. My wife and I gently immersed ourselves into the local Spanish community. Slowly month by month we grew in confidence, and before we knew it we were totally at home. We are now closer to our many Spanish friends than many of our good friends of more than 20 years from the UK.

Another act of kindness. Many years ago I was involved in a car accident. A big 4x4 driven by an even bigger cigar smoking Spaniard jumped a red light, ploughed into my car and sent it spinning into the doorway of someone's house. My wife's head hit the windscreen. She was taken to hospital but mercifully not badly injured. The police came and the Spanish guy blamed me and not speaking Spanish I was unable to defend myself. I think he was a well known local, very intimidating and seemed to have the respect of the police so no one came forward as a witness. We were taken to the police station, made our statements and I was resigned to copping all the blame. The big guy swaggered out and I nervously waited my fate and then another Spanish guy came in to speak to the police. I learned a little while later he worked at a hotel close to where the accident took place and saw the whole event from the hotel doorway and he'd taken the trouble to leave work and come to the police station to act as a witness and give a true account of what happened. I'd never seen him before or since, we were total strangers but he certainly helped me out of a tight spot!

Its human nature! ..and you sure are in luck that somebody kind is ready to help you in your situation. Nowadays it is not really 'that' hard to find kind people but there are times that we are missing them out in the most needed situations.
