There is a news item on Manilva Life (not sure I'm allowed to mention the name here - sorry if it's not allowed) saying the council may subsidise wifi for the whole of Manilva by 85 - 90%.

That's interesting. (And Justin doesn't mind mentioning ML, he thinks it's a great website!!).
I remember reading an article ages ago about Malaga wanting to make wifi access available freely everywhere! Maybe this is a step in that direction! Wish I could recall where I read it now, but I do definitely recall reading that it was on their agenda to make the region totally wifi accessible for all. I mean, that's the way it's going isn't it? Even here in Dubai, the most money grabbing place ever at the moment - you can sit in a few of the shopping malls and get free wifi access!! We see them every weekend!!
It can happen!!!

I have been looking into how we can have WiFi in Duquesa Village and have been working with a friend from Coto Real to see how best to achieve this for both communities. We have been in dialogue for some time with a company I was advised could be able to provide the signal. That company is Y-internet. they are based further up the coast towards Malaga. I met with their owner some while ago so he could see how he could engineer the solution for Coto Real and ourselves, as their coverage stops about 40kms up the coast.
My pal in CR also met with the owner and eventually he produced a solution which meant that an investment of €6000 was required to provide the solution. Since then, however, we have a found a company www.freewifispain.com who are providing WiFi, subject to survey. There are a number of users already in CR so if you are interested please contact Brian at support@freewifispain.com.

I have been told by my next door neighbour that the library in Manilva (down Calle Iglesia towards the church and turn sharp right and its there) has free internet.
They have machines available and you can also connect using WiFi on your laptop.

Has anyone tried a Spanish (as opposed to one bought/topped up outside Spain) payg USB modem/dongle? I'd be interested to know what the reception/connection is like in DV and if it's worth buying one there, if I bring a laptop with me (especially now that Kings Club has closed in Monte Duquesa!!).

I did look at the other thread, but no one mentioned having bought and used one in Spain. I know that probably doesn't affect the connection at DV, whether using one bought there or one from the UK, say, but just wondered whether it was cost effective too.

Yes, apparently you can buy 10 Euros a week packages from freewifispain.com when you are there. Has anybody done this? I'm going to check with their support before I go to find out - that would be a real bonus! You can apparently get the signal okay at Coto Real, so hopefully Duquesa Village shouldn't be too bad.

Hi John, sorry, we were home when I read this. Ours is an international dongle bought in the UK. I haven't a clue what it was connected to to be honest but people were using laptops and pdas with wifi in Ed's for free.

In Manilva I have used an external USB WiFi dongle (they are more sensitive than the internal WiFi unit) with 5m USB extension cable and I have glued the cable end into an Aluminium wok lid in the center and then plug in the adapter. This means I can use the laptop inside so I can see the screen. The home made satellite type dish sits on a bracket I have made on my balcony wall.
With this I receive up to 20 signals and some are usable. I receive signals as far away as Banus and Estepona on a good day.
I will be using a neighbour wireless secure link and paying a contribution to his ADSL charges.
