TV Satellite Reception

We have not been back to our apartment since the beginning of October and are wondering if the satellite reception for the TV has been lost yet?  We were informed that this would be the case from Mid October onwards.  We are due back out in early Feb and wondered if we needed to make arrangements for the internet prior to our return?

Hi, has anyone in DV noticed any changes in reception since the BBC has now moved some of its channells over to the new ASTRA 2E satellite.

Nigel, are you actually on Duquesa Village as your description says you live to the west of Estepona. The link you refer to on Eye on Spain does state that larger satallite dishes do still appear to be picking up the channels. The community dishes on Duquesa Village are large, possibly 2m+, so just wondering if by chance they might still be picking up BBC etc.

No,I do not live Duquesa Village but near the Galera Park roundabout. Everyone around here has lost all there BBC Channels and even myself who has a big Dish. So I fail to understand how some people are still receiving thes Signals. My friend in Princess Christina has an HD Box and is not even getting the BBC HD Channels

Has anyone asked AEA if they know what's happening?

Nothing to do with AEA, davyboy57 - all the BBC channels have moved to the new Astra 2E satellite and ITV and Channel 4 will be going soon too.  

I have read that even with a 3m dish it's going to be difficult to receive the channels down here.

I will be that our apartment in the next couple of days, so will check the reception - unless someone who is already there can confirm on here.

We have lost the BBC channels where we are in Guadiaro - we have about a 1.5m dish.

I can confirm that we have lost BBC on DV
And apparently all the ITV channels are going in the next few days maybe even tomorrow

Doesn't matter about a dish I went to a meeting tonight in Fathoms Bar with a Demonstration of IPTV seems this is the only way to receive these UK channels except if a whole community subscribes to satellite which is too expensive as an individual don't really understand that one myself but that's with a dish .think that's more for smaller communities than DV as everyone clubs together to share the cost and on DV not everyone on each block would want to share it I wouldn't have thought anyway.
So Internet is prob the only way so no more corrie now unless it's on the laptop via Film On that's the way the IPTV Box streams it too

Other channels likely to go this week.

I had a demo in my house in Manilva this week for a low cost box, it's very good I get all uk channels, sky sports, bt sports and access to lots of films. Guys based in Sabinillas.

I have a computing background hardware and software and the guys have the same technical background as me so I trust them. I go to the uk this week as I go backwards and forwards. Just ordered a box for the uk as well.

You need an internet connection of about 2.5 megabits per second measure it with ookla broadband speed tester, look on google.

Uk tv and sports not as clear as satellite, but films very clear, and no subscriptions.

Have installed satellite in the past in the uk since the analogue days.

Jeff, have you seen, enquirer about community type solutions? If there is no satellite signal , there is no satellite signal so the alternative method of transmission is via the internet ie broadband over a telephone line or wifi. Aea have told me about a possible solution using the telephone lines for the lifts and adding broadband and radiating the service into co located apartments. Benefit of this is 2 fold 1. Coronation st is back 2. It will cost and only those apartments who are upto date with their fees will be eligible to receive this new service.
Ps ...computing background ! That was when computers were the size of my apartment as I remember thos Harris boxes!!

John, can you explain a little more about this please?  Are you saying that they would provide broadband free of charge to those up to date with their community fees?  I don't get it - obviously, those who haven't paid their fees wouldn't much be bothered by broadband and, if so, would get it installed by Movistar for about €20 per month, significantly less than their community fees!  Or am I missing something?

Jan, I am not saying what the price would be because AEA have not finalised anything as yet, it is an avenue they are exploring. The point about TV and debtors is that if the community DID come up with a solution , it will likely be a cost , and only those not on the list would be entitled to this community service. Yes they could go and get broadband , as you have pointed out , cheaper than the fees but that is out of the community's control.

1. Internet based tv but need 2.5 mbs per box
2. Satellite broadcast broadband expensive I think
3. Mini dish for rebroadcast tv from one of the hills need line of sight fir this, again not cheap
4. VDSL like adsl but high speed

We will look at 4. for Balcones as one feed may cover a few houses.

I have an android box here in the uk running XBMC, also loaded on to my laptop and used my neighbours wifi in spain, need computer experience to set up, works well not hd quality on tv very good quality on films, massive amount of content.

Includes sky and bt sports, no subs.

We should speak on skype or FaceTime.

I think maybe we need to get this in perspective.  The only channels that have gone (for now) are the ITVs, BBCs and Channel 4s (if you have a sky subscription card then you can add C4 in 'other channels' and if it's a paid subscription you can add the E4s and More 4s).  The 5s went ages ago.  If you have a sky HD package you still have some of the HD channels available (ITV 2, 3, etc).

You are still able to receive all the other channels - CBS channels, Pick, Challenge, etc. as far as I can make out.  The only thing investing in a box will do is give you access to loads of pirated movies, etc.  You can still watch live tv on filmon and viewtelly without a problem (so far).  If you have a vpn you can watch live on the respective websites - so all you need is a connection to your tv from a laptop, ipod, ipad, smart phone, etc.  Obviously goes without saying that you will need a broadband connection of at least 3mbs.

I have programmed our Ouya with xbmc with all the add ons and also have bought a box - with exactly the same thing (thought I might get something a bit better, but it was the exact same software with a possibly better hardware system)!!  My 14year old son has also installed xbmc on his laptop.  It's not difficult at all - xbmchub has a wizard that will install all you need.  You can install xbmc on different devices - their website is xbmc.org - and xbmchub.com offer loads of info on add-ons, etc.

We do not use the box to watch live tv as the quality is not great and the apps keep dropping - we use the browser on our smart tv and go directly to filmon or viewtelly and it works great, without dropping.  We do use the box to watch pirated movies and tv series - period.

So it depends on what you want - if you want the channels you had before the satellite move, then it's simple, you don't really need to buy anything except maybe a cable to connect your device to the tv.  If you want the extra streams (which are some of the time unreliable and plug-ins dont work, etc.) then buy a box - which you can buy fully loaded already on amazon much cheaper than you pay here in Spain.

Guess it's a personal decision as to how much ease of use you wish - and how much time you spend watching tv!  With a simple vpn you can watch all the catch up you want and someone on another site posted about a little plugin for Chrome (and I think Firefox and possibly Safari) that will hide your ip - zenmate.com.  Works well - I've tried UK and USA sites and didn't have a problem.

So there are loads of solutions out there without having to spend loads - and probably more reliable!  I've tried them all!

Definitely possible, John - Neale and Caroline have a payg data sim.  Think it may be movistar and they use a little wifi router.  I'll ask them for details.
