Familiar with most of the coastal resorts between Denia and Gibraltar, a distance of about 650 km, my favourite is Torrevieja. I have lived on the Sol and of course the Blanca.
To me Torrevieja and Alicante knock spots off their Sol and Murcia / Costa Calida ‘rivals’. When I take visitors to Marbella they are always under whelmed.
Strangely, whenever I mention Torrevieja to friends in Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Marbella and suchlike, there’s disbelief, cynicism or disdain. I then ask, “Have you been to Torrevieja?” Invariably they have not but still feel able to comment on it. Just an opinion expressed. Keep it civil.

May I ask what it is you actually like about Torrievieja and Alicante? My view has always been that pretty much the entire Alicante coast is a horrible tourist trap, at least from my experience, the same goes for Fuengirola,Torremolinos and alike...maybe I'm missing out on something, I've been to all of them as a visitor and wasn't that impressed. I do however like Denia which is more under developed than other areas. One of my favourite coasts is the Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona, some wonderful water and coves, similar to the Balearic islands.

How anyone can mention the beautiful Spanish city of Alicante in the same breath as the Northern European ghetto of Torrevieja is beyond me. My favourite southern resort has to be Nerja. Of course it is commercialised - it is a holiday resort- but it still manages to retain charm and a Spanish ambiance. With a choice of beaches from several coves to the longer expanse of Burriana, its winding narrow streets, its range of eateries and watering holes to suit all tastes and wallets, the varied atmosphere in its barrios, this is one of my favourite places in the world and arguably the most picturesque resort in Spain. Just my opinion of course! There are also many delightful small resorts on the Costa Brava.

Very little on this site about places between Alicante and Benidorm. El Campello for example some 15 Km north of Alicante is a lovely little town with a fantastic beach and traffic free marine parade plus a marina. Loads of good shops and supermarkets without being over commercialised - not many hotels so tourism limited ... the Spanish however know it!!
Good video on internet ... just put in El Campello.

Personally I love the Costa Tropical as it seems to be a much more traditional coast. It might have pebble beaches rather than sand but it's relatively undeveloped in comparison to other areas. For me the town of Salobreña is just stunning. It's a white Andalucian village built up a hill with a Moorish castle at the top and it also has some really good seafood restaurants and bars on the playa. It's a very Spanish resort and that's another reason to live it; I can sit on he beach & only hear the occasional Brit. In the winter it turns into Sleepytown & you can sometimes feel like you've got the place to yourself. It's definitely a world away from the pints & burgers of Benidorm!

Of course your all wrong as you are looking in the wrong costas. The southern part of the costa de la Luz is unspoilt and scenic. To cap that is has the stunning town of Vejer de la Frontera. Voted in May this year in a Spanish travel mag for the Spanish as the second prettiest town in Spain. A mere 10 minutes drive from el palmer beach which is as unspoilt a beach as anywhere you can find. As if that was not enough it becoming the Ludlow of Spain as highlighted by the Sunday Times travel section ie a real foodie expeience at great prices for food and drink.

The Costa Cálida along the port of Mazarron from the nudist beach in Bolnuevo to the headland and the diving school in front on the Antipodean restaurant, can't in my opinion be beaten for quality and quietness.

Rincón de la Victoria, just 30 minutes by bus from Málaga, is still a very Spanish town, with not a single British bar, a clean, fairly modern town, with fantastic views to Málaga and Torremolinos and the mountains beyond.

Personally i like the Costa Del Sol, "all human life is there" (as the News of the World used to say) and some sub human life as well. it makes things interesting.
I would rather go to Malaga tham Marbella, a great up-coming city and holiday destination, much under-rated.
Also the "Del Sol" is within easy reach of many beautiful inland villages and national parks.
You just can't beat it.

Hi - well I've been here in Estepona since the mid 1980's and the place has gone from strength to strength over that time. I used to be in video production and so my present hobby is recording month by month, a year of Ex Pat life here. I've attached the intro clip and if anyone wants to learn more, here you go...
Well actually I've just been stoped from including the link to my website. I'm told I can't do that until my account has been approved. I wonder when that will be - been a member now for ages

If you are loking for somewhere inlnand we have a house in a town called Marmolejo. 8 000 people.............small town. Typical Andalucia. Spanish speaking. Me (Irish) and German only foreignors with houses here. At the foot of the Sierra Morena mountains and very, very hot in summer. Regularly 2 degrees above Seville. 40 minutes from Cordoba. Eight banks and no signs of a crisis. Every time we come here a new shop or bar has opened. No more houses for sale than pre crisis. Sometimes I love it but more times I hate it. Boring as $&%?. Small town thinkers. Have as much in common with the people that I have met here than the man in the moon. Maybe it is me is the problem but this year can´t wait to get back to teeaching at college. After coming here for eighteen years I have one buddy. Onñy reason I come here is because the missus is from here.
That said Johann Cruyff and his company "Key resorts" apparently put down a deposit or bought the land a couple of years back to build an international golf course, complete with marina, hotels etc in an area of outstanding beauty 7 km from Marmolejo. I have heard a number of conflicting stories as regards the plans to build this development. The most recent story being that the money put down by "key resorts" has gone missing and nobody knows where it is. The mayor of Marmolejo who dealt with the money died suddenly a couple of years back and nobody knows where the money is. "key resorts" apparently have been denied permission to continue with their plans and now want thheir moneyback. That is the latest that I heard. Although the golf course development is still being advertised on the key resorts website. http://www.thekey.es/en/resorts/ladehesilla/ and the town hall have no money and are in big s$&%.
One of the entrepreneurs of the town has recently been convicted of the largest fraud case in Andalusian history.
They built an indoor swiming pool beside the outdoor olympic sized swimming pool that cost I don´t know how many millions of euros (EU money no doubht..........our taxes) and now realise that they can´t open it in winter because it would cost somewhere in the region of 3.50 euros per entrant and that they would need 750 entrants per week (or month) to make it profitable.................which aint going to happen.
Anyway this is Marmolejo. Hot......very hot, boring...............very boring, eventful, contoversial, typical, isolated.............sort of and bucking the crisis trend.

@biljim. i'd have enjoyed watching your video but the background racket defeated me. why, as an ex video pro, you'd want to drown out your production with heavy metal is beyond me. the views could speak for themselves. sorry to be grumpy.

Hi there from sunny Glasgow. Costa de la Luz for us since 2006 when we bought a plot and now occupy a lovely villa on the Neuvo Portil golf course and 10 minutes from the 10k beach to Punta Umbria. Chosen as a Spanish resort with no strips of Brit breakfast, happy hours or karaoke etc. Following retiral we spend 3-4 months a year there now and have become familiar with the locals and enjoying the challenge of learning more Spanish. Would stay longer but alas too far to follow my beloved Celtic and Sandra our family etc. Real Betis in Sevilla a great consolation prize though !
Long live Andalucia - we love it
Graham & Sandra

Of course the topic is about the "Best Town & City" not the best costa. The one which stands out for me in all the Spanish costas is CARTEGENA in the area of Murcia . Its a historic naval port with Roman Theatre which is a delight to visit. In the Port Stands the oldest submarine in the World ( By the way its not yellow). The city centre is full of wide streets open to walkers (but not traffic) and it has a very "The real spain" feel to the atmosphere.
This is proved by the current surge of Med Cruise Ships docking in to the Port with thousands of passengers on daily basis strolling around the sites.
The most underated "Hidden Jem" on the Costa Calida.. CARTEGENA
