MAPFRE Insurance - anyone have a view?

Hi,

We've had a quote from MAPFRE for house and contents insurance for 181,84 euros for the year. This covers contents up to 18,000 euros for a holiday home not being rented to 3rd parties. We also got a quote from Zurich through Polaris for 234,47 euros and the only difference seems to be that public liability for MAPFRE is 150,000 euros and for Zurich it's 300,000.

Does anyone have a view or experience of MAPFRE. They are a spanish company with english speaking help lines but apart from that we don't know anything else about them.

I have never heard of MAPFRE but as long as you check the policy wording etc, I wouldn't expect there to be a problem.  The public liability cover is more important if  you are planning to rent out.  Although the Zurich quote refers to 300,000 euros for public liability cover, when you actually get the policy document this is limited to 150,000 per victim.  You would have to be damned unlucky to have two victims claiming against you to reach your 300,000 euro indemnity limit.!! I am sure this was not referred to in the original quote and you only get to find out about it when you receive the actual policy document.  

I am therefore looking into getting some top-up cover for public liability, or a completely separate policy, as 150,000 euros is not really sufficient if you are renting out.

For this reason, I wouldn't let the difference in the level of PL cover affect your decision.  I suppose the advantage of Zurich is that it is a reputable "blue chip" underwriter but that said, their premium is higher.

Probably not much help, but something to think about.

Hi Peter - I've tried getting info on their website without much luck, but if you want to look further, I just picked up these companies from the general forum, both based in torrevieja, you can go online and both have English speaking staff.
