Hi
We were there in January and it was "stripped to the bones" then - did you actually see any activity - because when I queried at the Sales Office about when it would be completed they said probably June - (and that was in January) - so not much progress?

In Spain today and went to Beach Club this morning and counted 23 people working hard.
Why do some people try to be so negative using out of date info to cause worry among owners, sad really.
Anyway I can confirm it is taking shape and they looked very busy to me.

There is actually no need for that kind of comment. I only observed that in January the club was down to the bare bones and according to ARky it is still in the same situation - so merely enquiring if work is actually progressing. I don't consider that a negative comment - only an enquiry!
I for one will be absolutely thrilled to bits when the Beach Club is finished and up and running together with the Club House, hotel, spa and shops having completed some 16 months ago.

Hi Arky
Thanks for posting your pictures - to be quite honest - we took some pix in January and the Beach Club was in roughly the same condition then - with lots of builders materials etc. laying around, the pool very dirty etc. It was a Sunday and there were lots of "sunday afternooners" around. We got chatting to some local Spanish people who said that they loved the villa and that it was the most individual and extraordinary and special villa on La Manga - I think they were a little sad to see it in the condition that it was. I have to say when we first saw it about 18 months ago we were very taken with it (before work started). We still think it has a good chance of being just as striking and individual - but June? Do you honestly think they can get it ready in 8 weeks now? I am not being negative - honestly - but knowing how developers stretch "completion" dates in Spain - June would seem to be so near and yet so far!

Hi India,
I understand your comments about negative postings on this site, but they are misdirected. If you check back over previous threads, you will see that Sandra has provided a lot of useful information and has been as enthusiastic as anyone about Roda.

Well to be honest, I think the whole thing is disgusting, and yes I am being negative. Some of us at Roda, that are renting our apartments would like the beach club finished and not made to look stupid when people that are renting ask where the beach club is and why is it not in use. Should have been called Roda Golf and (possible sometime in the future if your lucky) Beach Club

Mike B, I don't understand why you are disgusted. If nothing had happened to the Beach Club and it was still standing, it wouldn't be open anyway until the start of the peak season (around June/July time) so your tenants wouldn't be able to go there anyway. At the end of the day Roda are trying to run a business and it is not economically viable to open a building next to a beach which also has a pool in the off-peak season when there are no tourists who want to go there and it's too cold to swim. We're still only in April and the weather still hasn't been fantastic with the winds making it very cold so even if the beach club were open now, i very much doubt there'd be a lot of business. Surely it's better to wait a bit (even if it opens late) and have a fantastic facility instead of one that's old and not upto the Roda standard (look at the new clubhouse and the inside of the apartments) which if it were still there and opening in June you would probably still be disgusted with the oldness of it.
The Spanish way of life is 'manana', very relaxed (overstatement!) whereas the british is if you want something done tomorrow, it had to be done yesterday. I myself have been annoyed at times with the 'manana' culture but if you want to live in Spain it's something you have to deal with and get used to and accept that delays are very more than likely.

Hi El Guiri
Whilst not wanting to inflame what is becoming a very sensitive situation - the fact is that Mike completed on Phase 1 last January and so did I. Calidona had acquired the beach club some time before that. Now, we can all understand them concentrating on the properties and the golf course and the clubhouse, but the fact is that the Beach Club was also one of the big selling points to us and to others when we signed up for Roda some 4 years ago now. So, in my view, the developers have had plenty of time to get the facility in working order (even allowing for manana time) and ready for use. Indeed, it was open for business last Summer and closed in September ( I believe and no doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong on this) with the promise that it would be refurbished and ready for use for this Summer.
Now, without being accused of negativity and pessimism and being British (impatient) - I believe that there is not a cat's chance of this place being ready for our second Summer season and Mike is right - the Resort is called "Roda Golf & Beach Club" . At the end of the day, people bought apartments and villas on the back of promises made with the appeal of facilities in place shortly thereafter. So, I think Mike has the right to be a little displeased with progress todate on the Beach Club - as am I. We did pay premium prices for a 5* resort and whilst I agree the properties are generally up to scratch, we have not yet had full value for our pounds/euros - but, as I have said before, I do believe the best is yet to come, so will practice being patient for a bit longer!
I have just visited the Roda Golf web site and this is a direct quote from the section re the Beach Club - with not one mention that it is shut undergoing major works:
"Roda Golf & Beach Resort presents an authentic Beach Club in the Manga Mar Menor
The Beach Club has a restaurant and bar service, which also serves the pool & beach area, a supervised swimming pool with jacuzzi, zone of solarium, changing rooms with lockers, etc… all for the benefit of the owners and residents of Roda Golf & Beach Resort.
In order to get to the new zone of leisure Roda Golf & Beach Resort has available a transport service by ferry and minibus. With departure point at the pier of the “Escuela de Piragüismo” of Santiago de la Ribera, it arrives at Puerto Tomás Maestre, in La Manga del Mar Menor. Once there, a minibus will cover the short trip to the Beach Club."

At the AGM for Phase 1 a letter from Roda was read out explaining exactly what was happening with the Beach Club. The letter was to have been posted out by Roda to all owners but I for one have not yet received it. However, the letter did point out exactly what was happening and it was clear that as the actual building is a building of historical importance it has got the UK equivalent of a preservation/conservation order on it and so Roda have to be very careful about renovations being made to it. This no doubt explains why it is taking so long as materials etc would all have to be approved and in keeping with the previous structure. The letter also, I think, mentioned a complimentary shuttle from Roda to the boat at Santiago de la Ribera and the same on La Manga Strip to the Beach Club but the cost of the boat remains at 10euro per person.
I agree with El Guiri that any business worth its salt would not open a Beach Club any earlier than the summer as they would simply have staff twiddling their thumbs but having seen the finish in the Casa Club I can´t wait to see what they do with the Beach Club - the plans in the Sales Office are worth seeing.
The cost of travelling to the Beach Club at 10euro per person for the boat trip the Beach Club will not appeal to too many renters at the moment as most of them are renting our properties for next to nothing in comparison with a lot of other places. I am not promoting the Beach Club as a part of my rental packages as there are no guarantees about when it will be open. A family day out for five people at 50euro before you even buy a drink or eat something is an expensive day out especially for those from the UK with the euro set to stay high this year but I doubt that the Beach Club is targeting families and is more likely to appeal to couples who desire a relaxing day out, away from the busy pools on the resort and who wish to enjoy poolside drinks etc in the lap of luxury. Hopefully when the Beach Club opens even if it is late in the summer this is exactly what we will get.

Thanks for the update. I haven't received a letter about the Beach Club (or my invoice for Comunidad fees come to that). Maybe we should suggest to Rosa and to our President that perhaps email correspondence may well be a way forward as most people seem to be on the end of a computer these days. Of course, hard copies should continue to be sent also.
Seriously, I don't think anyone is disputing that it will be well worth waiting for - and I do take on board your points about the care in which the whole project of the Beach Club has to be handled in the light of significance of the building etc. BUT, surely - that must have been known when Calidona purchased the building.
I am glad about the complimentary shuttle as parking at Santiago could have possibly been a nightmare.
So, I hope we all agree that the Beach Club will be absolutely fantastic and a real bonus = when it comes on board.

Well, just got back to Spain after a quick break in the UK, and I love this forum. Sparks of so many emotions!!!!
I am very proud to be an owner at Roda Golf and when I walk around the place I am honestly quite amazed at what they have done in such a short time, as back in the autumn of 2004 it was nothing but a mapped out golf course. And yes in a couple of years (maybe 3 or 4 or 5) when the dust has settled and we are walking round the 5* De Vere Hotel we will all be chuffed to bits, But here’s the thing, that doesn’t stop me from being fed up with Caladona and the team at Roda Golf now as we have had 16 months of lies and bs.
And to t u v, great idea about not mentioning to your renters about the beach club, mind you they might be a bit curious about the name of the resort. And as far as renters charging next to nothing (we charge next to something) unless you hadn’t notice, the place is still a very exclusive building site. Oops I’m being negative again......still my rose coloured glasses came of about 16 months ago.
Mike
