Gente D'Pasta, Avenida de Balsicas (Main Street), Roldan.

A pleasant little cubby-hole of a restaurant, serving the standard Italian menu. This restaurant is fairly new, and surprisingly swish for Roldan. The service was fine, the food was better and the price brought a smile to my face (shared salad starter, two nicely-sized pizzas, a tiramisu and a cheesecake to kill for and a couple of beers cost us 25 Euros).

The only thing I would criticise was the disconcerting experience of being able to see the plates and hands of the people at the table to our side, but not their bodies or faces. Get one of the tables next to the wall, as the tables which run down the centre are separated by an ineffective partition which has long, low gaps at table level. At one point, I was tempted to answer the phone of the guy at the next table by simply reaching 6 inches to my left.

In response to your post regarding the Indian across the motorway, we have been 4 times in the last 6 months and each time we have had nothing but a great dining experience.  The food and service are impeccable, price and  atmosphere always good.  From our experience booking a necessity as we have been disappointed on 1 occasion.

Agree with you Jonesyboy, have been there several times including January this year and had no problem with flies.  My husband even got a free bottle of wine on his birthday.

I have to go with the most recent replies to this.  I think you have to have been really unlucky.  My Dad comes over from Scotland every 8 weeks or so and we always go to the Indian and we have never experienced what you  have had.  The food is brilliant, and my Dad knows, he is an avid indian food eater, and the staff are always lovely, very helpful and polite.

Another couple of places to try are: Bamboo on La Torre, Limonara on La Torre and their Italian restaurant.  You have to bear in mind every restaurant is to the visitor's taste.  What appeals to you doesn't necessarily appeal to your neighbour.  Personally, we as a family, cannot go passed La Diva in Los Alcazares.  Food is always excellent.  Staff are great and have a bit of a crack about them and generally all round it's our best for food.  Thier fillet steak - mmmmm  - mouth waters thinking of it - and I don't think it is particulary expensive.

Also in our village, John's Bar, or Bar Kalkata, do excellent food on a Saturday and Sunday night - we only found this out last week and will be trying it this Saturday so will update you.

Do you know where the market is on a thursday in the village.  If you do, it's on that street, coming from our development probably about half way up on the right.  Coming from the opposite way.  If you were standing at the garage facing the square with the little park for children, there is the PK332 on the corner.  John's Bar is down that street, again possibly about half way on the left.  He also has lottery signs outside the bar.

Hi neighbours

All this taking of food is making me hungry, coming over next week, 26th April. Not being flash BUT if you don’t already have one suggest you invest in a Tom Tom / sat nav.

I brought mine over the last time we came over to Balsicas. For those who don’t have one, just go into the menu and you can look up everything from airports to hospitals to restaurants. Select were you want to eat and follow directions, Corinne and I had quite a lot of fun with this and found some lovely places to eat as far a field as Jumilla to Los Urrutias down the coast, and just do what we do, point to the menus and order, it’s a bit of a surprise what you end up with because the menus are normally all Spanish {there’s a surprise} but isn’t that just the reason we all came out here? Love it.

For those of you who like a bet....
Newcastle 1   - Sunderland 2   come on the lads…………..

Right folks, Bar Kalkata.  Hubby, daughter and I were there last night for food.   It's probably not a restaurant as you would view a restaurant back in Britain.  It is very much a bar.  Very clean and very friendly staff, especially, Juan, the owner.  He doesn't have a menu yet but is considering it for the future so food choices were fairly limited.  Your main choices are either entrecote steak or fish.  The bar was very busy about 10/10.30ish with locals and they all seemed to be eating either tapas or crusty bread sandwiches.  Anyway we all had the entrecote steaks which were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection.  Unfortunately, they don't seem to do veg of any kind so all that was with the steaks were chips.  At the start of our meal he put down a basket of crusty bread, then came calamari, then a dish with scrambled egg,  prawns, mushrooms and pesto which was georgeous and then a big plate of tuna salad - all these were shared between the three of us.  then we had our steaks and I had a plate of fruit (fresh pineapple and water melon).  Now the best part -  price 50e - yes 50e and that included drinks!  Definitely worth a return visit.  One big down side for us was that as it got busy almost everyone was smoking even while eating and this morning all clothing is in the wash and even my handbag is stinking of cigarettes.  Obviously for people who are smokers they won't notice it so much.  So there you have it.

Hi, Teal

The food you had all sounds great.  I'll have to add this place to my long list of places to visit.  Although, I would prefer to sit outside if it is such a smokey place.  The 'No smoking' rule was introduced in Spain on 31 December 2005, I think, much earlier than in UK.  I'm not sure how it applies or is enforced in Spain.  Maybe some places are non-smoking and other are not ...

British-style main courses with meat/fish, potato and veg all on one plate in Spain (on the costas, mainly) are known as 'platos combinados'.  I haven't seen these advertised in 'real' Spain, just in tourist resorts.

The traditional Spanish way of doing things is to have a vegetable-based starter (primer plato/entrada) eg guisantes con jamón (peas and ham), judías verdes (green beans) etc, then the meat or fish course (plato principal/segundo plato) with a garnish of potato based something or salad, rather than the huge pile of chips/potatoes we are used to seeing.  Common desserts (postre) tend to be fresh fruit, 'flan' (creme caramel) or ice cream.  Rice pudding ('arroz con leche') is eaten cold and not as sweet as we would have it - bit of a shock to some Brits!

Generally, Spanish people I have met have tended to eat their main meal at lunchtime (2-4pm, with a meat course, followed by a rest/siesta) and a lighter meal late at night (9.30-1030, often fish or egg based main course) which is easier to digest when eaten so late.

Hope this helps navigate around a Spanish menu and enjoy the healthy Mediterranean diet!

Diane

Hi there, although the No Smoking rule came into force in 2005 here I would say most places, certainly the Spanish ones that I have come across, basically ignore it I suppose is the only way to put it.  Unfortunately, Bar Kalkata does not have outside seating.  Other than that the way you have described the menu more or less seems to be what we had.

Hi All

Here is one we tried when last over, its called: El Chato.  Food was excellent.
Its next door to Euronics in LOS ALCAZARES, not the Euronics in the plaza but the one further along heading towards the beach, i.e. if your coming towards the plaza from the AP7 instead of parking opposite the hotel, carry on down the same road its appox 5 mins further down on the left hand side

Enjoy!!!

Hi everyone

2 places we had recommended to us when last over by Jim & Gwen that I would like to pass on, both are in Los Alcazares, "NICO" to the left of the archies, staff were very friendly, food was excellent and if they offer you the shoulder of pork or leg of lamb, make sure your hungry as they were huge.
The other place is "Angela", through the archies and follow on to the next big roundabout, turn right and keep going, you will find it on the right opposite a large hotel, again very friendly staff and excellant food.

Enjoy

Pete

Bar Central - on the town square, across from the Centro Civico - is a wee gem. It is rough round the edges, but very good value and very tasty. I had a lunchtime menu del día (served from about 1:30 until about 3) of tuna macaroni followed by a thin but tasty steak with potatoes and courgettes, then the homemade tiramisu (fantastic), a caña and a coffee.

9 Euros.

Also, at night, it is will serve a burger or sandwich if you are peckish and dont want to trapse over to the curry house.

El Gordo (far end of the industrial estate where the indian is) is a very good restaurant. The do a la carte lunchtime menus and menu del día as well. I´ve eaten there a few timesand the food was excellent.

Also, they are open at night for evening meals.

Next door, they have a good little bar called BooZu with a bowling alley attached as well. A great night - food, drinks and bowling with the kids.
